Starting Rock: The Launchpad for Emerging Rock from Hauts-de-Seine
The Starting Rock Festival is part of the long tradition of supporting contemporary music that Hauts-de-Seine has developed over the decades. Organized in Gennevilliers, a dynamic city in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, this festival serves as a showcase for emerging rock bands from the department, offering them a rare opportunity to perform under professional conditions before an engaged audience.
A Springboard for Local Artists
Starting Rock's primary mission is to identify and promote local talent. Candidate bands—high school groups, young adults, advanced amateurs, or semi-professionals—go through a selection process that leads to their programming on the festival stage. This springboard mechanism offers them media exposure and credibility that can accelerate their artistic development.
The festival embraces a wide spectrum of electric guitars: classic rock with a warm sound, nervously energetic punk, powerful metal riffs, atmospheric indie-rock, or raw garage-rock. This stylistic diversity reflects the richness of amateur musical practices in Hauts-de-Seine and allows a varied audience to find something to enjoy in the programming.
Gennevilliers, a City of Rock Culture
For years, Gennevilliers has hosted quality musical events, notably at Le Tamanoir, a reference concert venue dedicated to contemporary world music and emerging scenes. This existing cultural infrastructure provides a logistical and symbolic anchor for the festival, which benefits from the experience and network of these structures for its realization.
The city is also known for its dense musical associative fabric, with numerous local band rehearsals taking place in municipal spaces, MJCs, and cultural associations. The Starting Rock festival is, in a way, the natural culmination of this grassroots musical effervescence.
A Program Driven by the Raw Energy of Live Rock
Attending Starting Rock means, above all, immersing yourself in the raw, communicative energy of live rock music. Concerts follow one another at a brisk pace, with each band having its stage time to win over a curious and supportive audience. The atmosphere, both electric and friendly, is characteristic of these human-scale festivals where you can easily meet the musicians after their set.
Industry professionals—managers, venue programmers, music journalists—often attend these events to scout tomorrow's talent, adding a professional dimension to the event. The festival is thus a crossroads between amateur passion and the professional world of live performance.
