Un Écran des Étoiles: Open-Air Cinema in the Heart of the Gorges de l'Allier

The Un Écran des Étoiles festival is a unique traveling film event in Haute-Loire. Every summer, from late July to early August, it transforms village squares, castle courtyards, and remarkable natural sites in the Gorges de l'Allier into open-air cinemas. Founded in March 2017, the festival held its first edition in the summer of 2018 on the theme "Douce France", with screenings in Saint-Privat-du-Dragon, Pébrac, Ally, and Vieille-Brioude.

A Friendly and Accessible Concept

The festival's principle is based on free screenings with voluntary contributions, making cinema accessible to everyone in rural areas far from movie theaters. Screenings mainly take place on Monday and Friday evenings, starting around 9:30 PM - 9:45 PM at dusk. The professional equipment includes 60 m² or 24 m² screens depending on the location, ensuring remarkable outdoor projection quality.

Activities to Showcase the Region

Each screening evening is preceded by an activity program from 1 PM to 8 PM highlighting local associations, local producers, and the heritage of the host towns. These intergenerational friendly moments allow residents and visitors to (re)discover their region while enjoying a festive atmosphere. Spectators are invited to bring their own seating (chairs, blankets, loungers) to comfortably enjoy the show.

Remarkable Growth

Since its creation, the festival has experienced growing success, reflecting genuine popular enthusiasm. From 650 spectators at the first edition in 2018, attendance peaked at 2,000 spectators in 2022, then 1,900 spectators in 2024. In total, over 8,000 people have attended screenings since the festival's inception. This positive trend illustrates the need for accessible and friendly cultural events in rural areas.

Strong Local Roots

Each year, the festival takes place in different towns in the Gorges de l'Allier region and its surroundings: Brioude, Saint-Privat-du-Dragon, Chassagne, Siaugues-Sainte-Marie, Chavaniac-Lafayette, Pébrac, Ally, Vieille-Brioude, Saint-Just-près-Brioude, Mazerat-Aurouze. This itinerant nature helps to bring rural villages to life and create moments of sharing in historic locations, such as the famous Château de Chavaniac-Lafayette, the birthplace of the Marquis de La Fayette.

Practical Information

Dates and Times

The festival takes place every summer between late July and early August, with 4 to 5 screening evenings spread over approximately 12 days. Screenings are mainly scheduled on Mondays and Fridays. Activities begin at 1 PM and continue until 8 PM with stands from associations, local producer markets, and activities for all ages. Screenings start at dusk, generally around 9:30 PM - 9:45 PM. In case of bad weather, an indoor alternative is systematically planned in each host town.

Prices

Screenings are completely free. A voluntary contribution collection is offered at the end of each screening to support the association and fund future editions. This solidarity-based economic model allows everyone to access cinema, even in rural areas far from movie theaters.

Access to Various Screening Sites

By car: Brioude, the main town of the festival, is accessible via the A75 motorway (exit 20 from Clermont-Ferrand, about 1h15) or the RN102 from Le Puy-en-Velay (about 45 minutes). Other host towns (Chassagne, Siaugues-Sainte-Marie, Chavaniac-Lafayette, Saint-Just-près-Brioude) are accessible via the departmental network. Each screening site has free parking nearby.

By train: Brioude SNCF station is served by TER trains from Clermont-Ferrand (about 1h15) and Le Puy-en-Velay (about 30 minutes). For sites far from the station, personal transport is recommended.

Equipment and Setup

The festival uses professional projection equipment with 60 m² or 24 m² screens depending on the site configuration. Sound and visual quality are comparable to that of a cinema. Spectators are invited to bring their own seating: folding chairs, loungers, blankets, or cushions to settle comfortably in village squares or castle courtyards.
