Historical sound and light show at the Montmédy Citadel
The Son et Lumière des Chierothains is a nocturnal historical show organized at the Montmédy Citadel by the association Les Chiérothains. Composed of 23 living tableaux, this show retraces the history of the fortified town of Montmédy from the Western Roman Empire to the present day, including the siege of 1657 by Louis XIV's troops, the Treaty of the Pyrenees, and the great moments of the city. With 90 volunteers from 13 villages and 4 countries, this popular show celebrates the rich heritage of the northern Meuse region in an exceptional setting.
The Son et Lumière des Chierothains is a large-scale historical show that takes place in the heart of the Montmédy Citadel, one of Lorraine's most remarkable Vauban fortifications. This nocturnal show immerses spectators in the eventful history of this fortified town in northern Meuse, through 23 living tableaux combining historical reenactment, light effects, music, and narration.
The show retraces over two millennia of history, from the Western Roman Empire to contemporary times. Among the highlights, spectators relive the siege of Montmédy in 1657 by the troops of Louis XIV, accompanied by Vauban and Cardinal Mazarin, the Treaty of the Pyrenees and the royal marriage of Louis XIV, as well as the dark hours of the Montmédy garrison in August 1914. Illustrious local figures are also honored, such as the harpist Nicolas Bochsa, born in Montmédy in 1789, and the painter Jules Bastien-Lepage.
The originality of the show lies in the diversity of its cast: the Chiérothains have 90 members from 13 villages, 2 departments, and 4 countries (France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Canada). All are driven by the same passion to bring to life and promote the rich heritage of northern Meuse. This cross-border and international dimension gives the show a scope that extends far beyond the department's borders.
The Montmédy Citadel offers a spectacular natural setting for this sound and light show. Perched on a rocky outcrop, this fortress, remodeled by Vauban, overlooks the Chiers valley and provides a grand stage for historical reenactments. The play of light on the ramparts, bastions, and curtain walls creates a magical atmosphere that transports spectators through the centuries.
The Son et Lumière des Chierothains is a popular and unifying event that brings together the inhabitants of the region and attracts visitors from all over Lorraine and beyond. The performances are held in August, at dusk, in a festive and emotional atmosphere. It is a vibrant tribute to the history and heritage of this border region.
The Son et Lumière des Chierothains returns to the Montmédy Citadel in August 2026 for new nocturnal performances retracing the history of the fortified city since the Roman Empire.
