Voyage d'Hiver: Classical Music in the Heart of the Cantalian Winter

Since 1996, the Voyage d'Hiver festival has resonated with classical music in the snowy landscapes of Cantal. Organized by the association Musica Formosa, this unique winter event was born from a conviction: that chamber music and the classical repertoire find their most beautiful setting in the intimate and contemplative atmosphere of winter. The festival's name, borrowed from Franz Schubert's famous song cycle (Winterreise), was chosen by its founders on a snowy day while they were listening to this masterful work in their Cantal home.

A Foundational Human and Musical Adventure

The history of Voyage d'Hiver is inseparable from that of its founders. Luo-Chin Le Bot, a pianist of Taiwanese origin, a graduate of the musicology university of Taipei, gold medalist of the CNR of Toulouse, and a graduate of the École Normale de Musique de Paris, settled in Cantal with her husband Marc Le Bot. Together, they first organized small concerts among friends before founding the association Musica Formosa in 1996. Their bold gamble: to break with the convention that musical events only exist in the summer, and to prove that the Cantal department remains not only accessible but profoundly inspiring from December to April. Nearly thirty years later, the festival has become a pillar of Cantalian cultural life.

A Traveling Festival Across Cantal

Voyage d'Hiver is not confined to a single concert hall. Each season, the festival travels across the department, from Aurillac to Saint-Flour, from Vic-sur-Cère to Laroquebrou, from Mauriac to Montsalvy, including rural communes like Calvinet, Saint-Paul-des-Landes, or Maurines. Concerts take place in remarkable heritage sites: the Théâtre d'Aurillac, the Halle aux Blés of Saint-Flour, Romanesque churches, village halls. This itinerant nature is at the heart of the festival's philosophy: to bring classical music closer to the inhabitants, even in the most remote communes of Cantal.

A Demanding and Accessible Program

Each season of Voyage d'Hiver is structured around three weekends and about six concerts, complemented by musicology conferences that enlighten the public on the works and composers on the program. The programming mixes great classics of the repertoire — from Bach to Ravel, from Beethoven to Debussy, from Chopin to Fauré — and musical discoveries, with an opening towards baroque music, sacred music, and world musical traditions. The festival hosts internationally renowned artists alongside emerging young talents, in various formations: piano recitals, string quartets, a cappella vocal ensembles, instrumental duos.

A Solid Territorial Partnership

Voyage d'Hiver is part of a network of institutional partners that testifies to its territorial roots. The concerts are offered in partnership with the Communauté d'Agglomération du Bassin d'Aurillac (CABA), the Théâtre d'Aurillac, Saint-Flour Communauté, and the communes of the department. The association Musica Formosa ensures the artistic direction of the festival and also contributes, throughout the year, to the programming of Impulsions Musicales, a season of classical music concerts in the communes of the Aurillac basin. This cultural network makes Voyage d'Hiver much more than just a festival: it is a true tool for democratizing classical music in rural areas.
