International film festival on the representation of conflicts
War On Screen is an international film festival dedicated to the representation of conflicts in all genres of animated imagery. Created in 2013 and supported by La Comète, Scène nationale de Châlons-en-Champagne, the festival takes place every year in October. The only festival in the world dedicated to war in cinema, War On Screen offers two international competitions (feature and short films), retrospectives, thematic focuses, world and European premieres, and screenings presented by the film crews.
Founded in 2013, War On Screen is the only international film festival entirely dedicated to the representation of past, present, and future conflicts, whether real or imaginary, through fiction, documentary, and reportage. The festival embraces all cinematic genres: from comedy to espionage, from science fiction to historical epics, from social drama to action films. This open and pluralistic approach makes War On Screen a unique event in the landscape of international film festivals.
War On Screen is supported by La Comète, Scène nationale de Châlons-en-Champagne, located at Espace Pierre Dac, 5 rue des Fripiers. This major cultural venue in the Grand Est region offers optimal screening and reception conditions for a festival of this scale. The festival also extends to Suippes and Mourmelon, two towns in the Marne region marked by military history, creating a dialogue between cinema and territories of memory.
The heart of the festival lies in two international competitions: a feature film competition and a short film competition, bringing together films from around the world. An international jury awards prizes in each category. In addition, the festival offers retrospectives dedicated to filmmakers or themes, programmatic focuses, world and European premieres, as well as special screenings presented by film crews and distinguished guests.
Since its creation, War On Screen has benefited from the sponsorship of Albert Dupontel, a renowned French actor and director. This guiding figure supports the festival and contributes to its influence in the French and international film scene. Each year, the festival attracts film professionals, historians, journalists, and a passionate audience, making Châlons-en-Champagne a place for reflection and debate on the representation of conflicts on screen.
