Grand Est this weekend, May 30-31: Regalia lights up Reims, drums in Charleville, Champagne vineyards

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the season-opening Regalia light show on Reims Cathedral to the Aubamerican Days near Troyes, eleven handpicked Grand Est events to cross Ardennes, Champagne, Lorraine and Alsace in a single weekend.

The weekend of May 30-31 marks the start of Grand Est's big season. Champagne fires up its heritage shows, Argonne deploys its circus tents and Alsace opens its spring tasting trails. Our pick of the week is Regalia, the free son et lumiere designed by Montreal's Moment Factory and projected on the western facade of Reims Cathedral. The opening night falls on Friday May 29, then every evening until October. Eighty kilometres away, the Festival Tambours de Fête wraps its final weekend in Charleville-Mézières after a full week of world percussion. And on Saturday May 30, the Fêtes Johanniques push Reims six centuries back into the Middle Ages.

Regalia in Reims (51): Moment Factory relights Notre-Dame Cathedral

On Friday May 29, the west facade of Reims Cathedral ignites for the first time this year. Regalia is a free fifteen-minute multimedia show by Montreal studio Moment Factory, with an original score by Reims-based band The Shoes and the Radio France choir. The show revives the emotional charge of a coronation day, projected at monumental scale onto Gothic stone. Several screenings per evening, starting at nightfall. The cathedral square is open to all, no booking required. It's a new addition that really launches the Champagne tourist season and pairs well with late afternoon terraces on Place Royale.

Fêtes Johanniques in Reims (51): Joan of Arc returns to crown Charles VII

On Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31, Reims dives six centuries back for the Fêtes Johanniques. The celebration marks the 1429 coronation of Charles VII at the urging of Joan of Arc. Expect a grand period-costume parade across the historic centre, a medieval market on the cathedral square, street performances, jousts, craft workshops and a nighttime torchlit procession. Hundreds of costumed volunteers turn the city into a living tableau. It's one of Reims' great identity events, drawing locals and visitors from across France every year. Most of the city centre is free to access, with a packed schedule from 10am to midnight on Saturday.

Festival Tambours de Fête in Charleville-Mézières (08): final weekend of world percussion

The Festival Tambours de Fête enters its final two days on Saturday May 30 in Charleville-Mézières. Created in 1998 by the Tropic Carolo Combo troupe, this is a unique appointment in Grand Est devoted entirely to percussion: djembe, drum kit, body percussion, junk percussions, traditional sound systems from around the world. The AME, based on Rue de Champagne, programmes indoor concerts, street parades and beginner-friendly workshops open to everyone. Place Ducale and the banks of the Meuse pulse with the parade routes. A great chance to visit Charleville outside the World Puppet Theatre Festival season, in a more intimate, participatory format.

Foires de Champagne in Troyes (10): 45,000 visitors at opening

The Foires de Champagne open on Friday May 29 at the Le Cube exhibition park in Troyes. The largest commercial and festive event in the Troyes metro area gathers over 200 exhibitors across nine days and pulls around 45,000 visitors each year. It's a hybrid of classic trade fair and themed market, with food stalls, craftspeople, demos, kids' activities and evening concerts. Across 60,000 sqm, the format mixes useful shopping with a proper family day out. The opening weekend draws the bulk of the crowds. Free parking, onsite catering, openly down-to-earth atmosphere. A must for anyone wanting a feel of the Aube department's economy and festive vibe.

Aubamerican Days in Brienne-le-Château (10): 1,500 muscle cars on the tarmac

Brienne-le-Château airfield hosts the Aubamerican Days on Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31. Since 2022 this car and culture festival dedicated to Americana has gathered over 1,500 vehicles — Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, Dodges, pick-ups, vintage bikes, collector models — across the runways. The event combines static display, parades, country and rock concerts, US-themed food trucks, vintage flea market and drag racing demos. The disused military airbase setting fits the transatlantic mood perfectly. A full day on site, family-friendly. For enthusiasts, this is one of the largest yearly gatherings in France outside the Bourget airshow.

Vign'Art in Épernay (51): land art across UNESCO vineyards

The Vign'Art festival has been open since May 22 and runs all summer until September 20. This open-air gallery installs ephemeral contemporary art and land art pieces across some twenty villages on the Champagne slopes inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, between Épernay, Reims and the Marne Valley. The trail is free, open 24/7, walkable or cyclable. The May 30-31 weekend catches the installations at peak freshness, just before the summer crowds. Pair it with a cellar visit or a lunch in a winegrower village. The festival publishes an interactive map to plan your route, particularly well-suited to spring walks.

Festival Moov'O'Der at Lac du Der (52): 50 free activities for the lake's 50th

From Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31, the Festival Moov'O'Der kicks off the summer season on the largest artificial lake in Europe. The event sits within the 50th anniversary year of Lac du Der-Chantecoq and offers more than 50 free activities organised around land, water and air: watersport tasters, paddle, sailing, climbing, archery, BMX, skateboarding, treetop courses and aerial demos. The programme features concerts, a Saturday-night fireworks show and a Sunday-morning Color Run. The Giffaumont-Champaubert water sports station serves as headquarters. It's the ideal family event of the weekend in Haute-Marne, designed for all ages.

Festival Bon Moment in Nancy (54): three days of contemporary music at L'Autre Canal

L'Autre Canal hosts the Festival Bon Moment from Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31 in the Rives-de-Meurthe district of Nancy. The festival sticks to a curious booking line, with singular projects from the French-speaking and international scenes. This edition joins forces with the Fais-le Toi-même festival and L'Événement Photographique for a triple bill stacked on the same weekend. Expect indoor and outdoor concerts, exhibitions, panels, workshops, a food area and artist meet-and-greets. The format mixes ages and music-discovery levels. Friendly pricing, several free strands, the laid-back vibe L'Autre Canal is known for.

Rock'M Ried Festival in Muntzenheim (68): tribute bands near Colmar

From Friday May 29 to Sunday May 31, the Espace Ried Brun in Muntzenheim, twenty minutes from Colmar, pulses for the Rock'M Ried Festival. Launched in 2022 by the Zik'Inside association and Patrick Georgenthum, this appointment is entirely devoted to professional tribute bands covering 1970s, 80s and 90s rock. Dire Straits, Queen, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, AC/DC: the concerts reproduce legendary tours faithfully, lighting and sound included. The crowd mixes hardcore fans and families, with a deliberately modest capacity. On-site catering, campsite open. A smart format to relive iconic concerts without paying arena prices.

Tournée des Terroirs of the Kaysersberg Valley (68): Grand Cru pop-up bars

On Sunday May 31, the Tournée des Terroirs picks up its itinerant stops on the Alsace Wine Route. The concept: a pop-up bar at the foot of a Grand Cru for one day, with tastings, educational workshops, vineyard walks, DJ sets and small-scale local catering. This stop kicks off in the Kaysersberg valley, between the Wineck-Schlossberg in Katzenthal and the Schlossberg in Kaysersberg. The event speaks to seasoned tasters and curious newcomers alike. Per-glass pricing, open-air mood, unobstructed views over budding vineyards. A great way into Alsace's Grand Crus far from the classic cellar tasting room.

Festi'Val des Couleurs du Cirque in Vaucouleurs (55): traditional circus in Joan of Arc's town

The Festi'Val des Couleurs du Cirque has been running since Wednesday and wraps on Sunday May 31 in Vaucouleurs, in the Meuse. Run for over fifteen years by the local Tourist Office, the event champions traditional circus with big-top shows, kids' circus workshops, brass-band-led town parades and a Saturday-evening dinner-show. Joan of Arc's birthplace lends itself perfectly to the touring format. Bars and catering on site. For an off-the-beaten-track Saturday with family, this is exactly what to aim for, with the strong identity of a small rural festival backed by the whole village.

Worth a mention too
