Pays de la Loire this weekend: Venetian masks in Clisson, jazz at Epau Abbey and 8 more picks

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

From the Venetian masquerades of Clisson to the Europajazz residency at Epau Abbey, our ten festival picks across western France for 30-31 May.

The weekend of 30-31 May 2026 brings an unusually varied programme to the Pays de la Loire region. Contemporary creation lands in Le Mans and Blain, the Venetian carnival comes alive in the Tuscan-style streets of Clisson, and music echoes through the Epau and southern Vendee abbeys. Our editorial pick goes to the Clisson Masquerades, whose Venetian aesthetic stands apart from the more typical spring lineups.

Clisson Masquerades: two days of Venetian carnival in the Nantes wine country

Nicknamed the little Italy of the Nantes vineyards for its Tuscan-inspired architecture, the town of Clisson becomes a vast open-air stage on 30 and 31 May for the Clisson Masquerades. Venetian costumiers, masked processions, walking parades through the medieval centre and photo sessions on the steps of the castle: in just a few editions the event has become the French gathering point for fans of Carnevale di Venezia attire. Free access, expect peak crowds on Saturday afternoon.

Europajazz at the Royal Abbey of Epau: the highlight near Le Mans

Founded in 1980, Europajazz is one of the oldest jazz festivals in France. After three months of concerts spread across the region, the festival converges in late May beneath the Cistercian vaults of the Royal Abbey of Epau, on the edge of Le Mans. The weekend of 30-31 May marks the heart of this residency: international lineup, jazz meeting chamber music, careful staging in the cloister. With 40,000 attendees in 2019, the 2026 edition pushes further toward contemporary aesthetics.

Cadre Noir galas in Saumur: haute ecole horsemanship on UNESCO heritage list

The Cadre Noir galas resume their spring season at the historic Terrefort site in Saumur. Listed on the UNESCO intangible heritage register, the Cadre Noir presents haute ecole figures, school jumps and long-rein work in choreographed shows set to music. The 30-31 May weekend lines up with the final dates of the Spring of the Riders: more intimate than the summer galas, and a chance to see the young IFCE riders in a full performance setting.

Movies on the Rocks in Blain: three days mixing cult cinema and live concerts

From 29 to 31 May, the Cinema Saint-Laurent in Blain hosts the second edition of Movies on the Rocks, a hybrid festival devoted to the crossover between cinema and live music. The lineup combines 4K-restored films, rare screenings and concerts with Cali, Alan Simon, John Helliwell of Supertramp and Andrea Balestri, the Pinocchio of the Comencini film. A human-scale format, ideal for a rainy Saturday or a relaxed evening after a day on the Nantes coast.

Le Mans fait son Cirque: closing weekend of a 27,000-strong festival

Launched in 2002 by Le Plongeoir, a national circus hub, Le Mans fait son Cirque wraps up its 2026 edition this weekend. The Newton promenade and the big tops along Winston Churchill boulevard host around twenty shows, ranging from intimate creations to large-scale productions. The closing weekend traditionally gathers the most striking new pieces and the industry meetings: a smart pick to catch companies just out of residency without committing to a full evening.

O Mauvais Buisson: 20th edition of a grassroots festival in Maumusson

In Maumusson, on the esplanade of the Fontaine aux Merles pond, the festival O Mauvais Buisson celebrates its twentieth edition on 29 and 30 May. Founded in 2006 by an association of young locals, the festival has stuck to a compact two-night format, mixing national headliners in contemporary music with regional collectives. A good fit for a family-friendly atmosphere without giving up on a current lineup, with food and camping on site.

Open Air Photo Festival: the gallery opens at L'Ile-d'Olonne

30 May marks the opening of the Open Air Photo Festival, which turns the village and salt marshes of L'Ile-d'Olonne into a 1.5 km photographic trail. Large-format prints are mounted on low walls, facades and the paths leading to the marshes. About twenty volunteers handle the install. This weekend is the least busy of the run: the event stretches until November, but late-May visitors get sharp light and a salt harvest in full swing.

Festival des Voutes Celestes: classical music under southern Vendee abbeys

Run by the Vendee Departmental Council, the Festival des Voutes Celestes opens its 2026 cycle beneath the vaults of the Nieul-sur-l'Autise and Maillezais abbeys. The classical programme mixes prestige and discovery, with a clear taste for young soloists and rare Baroque repertoire. Limited capacity and exceptional acoustics: bring a layer for the 30 May concert, abbeys stay cool after sunset.

Organic Milk Festival in Mayenne: farm doors open on 31 May

On Sunday 31 May, organic dairy farms across the Mayenne department open their doors for the Organic Milk Festival, run by CIVAM Bio 53. The 100% organic, locally sourced breakfast is a chance to meet producers, visit the dairies and discuss farming methods. Free, family-friendly format, a real change from pure festival outings: fits neatly into a weekend that ends with a late-afternoon show near Laval or Le Mans.

Feodales de Clairbois: medieval life reenacted near Sainte-Suzanne

A short walk from the medieval village of Sainte-Suzanne (one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France), the Clairbois estate reopens its camp for the Feodales de Clairbois. On the second weekend of each month from April to August, the Mesnie association reenacts daily life on a 13th-century fortified farm: equestrian games, craft demonstrations, historical vignettes. The late-May 2026 edition lines up ideal conditions: spring weather, full costumes, reasonable crowds before the summer rush.

  • Les Arts s'en Melent in Les Landes-Genusson (29-30 May): reggae, hip-hop and French songwriting in the Godeliniere park, run by 350 volunteers.
  • La Deferlante in Pornic and Saint-Jean-de-Monts: kick-off of the summer cycle on the Atlantic coastline network, free open-air shows.
  • Anne de Bretagne Festival (touring 2026 edition): a stop around the Brittany Festival in several towns of Loire-Atlantique.
