Pentecost 2026: 12 festivals that sum up France this long weekend

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

Cannes, Roma Pilgrimage, Art Rock, Papillons de Nuit, FIMU Belfort, Chaumont, Vic-Fezensac feria: 12 cross-regional picks for Pentecost 2026.

Pentecost is, along with Ascension, the absolute peak of the French festival season. Over 500 events run from Friday to Monday, from the closing of the world's largest film festival on the Croisette to the 30,000 festival-goers at Art Rock in Saint-Brieuc, from the Camargue horsemen at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to the 50,000 spectators of Papillons de Nuit in Normandy. Out of that mass, here are 12 picks that best sum up France this May 22-24, 2026: international finale at Cannes, age-old Roma pilgrimage, independent music festivals, bullfighting feria, European lyric arts and monumental flea markets. One per region, almost. Our pick this week: the great Saturday night of May 23 at Art Rock, the multidisciplinary festival that Brittany has been waiting for every Pentecost since 1983.

Cannes Film Festival, the home stretch (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur)

The 79th Cannes Film Festival enters its home stretch. The closing ceremony and Palme d'Or award take place on Saturday May 23, the climax of twelve days of screenings, press conferences and red carpets at the Palais des Festivals. Even without an accreditation, the Croisette stays accessible: the Palais beach, the Steps photographable from a distance, the Carlton and Martinez terraces form a continuous spectacle until the final day. The only French event with planetary reach still active this weekend.

Roma Pilgrimage at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Europe in the Camargue (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur)

From May 24 to 26, the Roma Pilgrimage at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer gathers thousands of Roma, Gypsy and Traveller communities from around the world to honour Saint Sara, their patron. Procession of Sara the Black carried to the sea, Occitan masses inside the fortified church, gardian horsemen, flamenco and rumba music: this is one of Europe's largest religious and cultural gatherings. May 24 (Pentecost Sunday) marks the heart of the ceremonies. A plunge of rare intensity into a vibrant Camargue.

Art Rock in Saint-Brieuc, 30,000 festival-goers over three days (Brittany)

On May 22, 23 and 24, the Art Rock Festival takes over central Saint-Brieuc for its 41st edition. Founded in 1983 by the Wild Rose association, it is one of Brittany's largest multidisciplinary festivals: music, dance, street theatre, visual arts, digital arts and gastronomy cross paths over three days, drawing more than 30,000 festival-goers. Worth noting alongside: Rock'n Toques, the gourmet street food spinoff run by a collective of Michelin-starred chefs. The Breton flagship of the Pentecost weekend.

Papillons de Nuit in Saint-Laurent-de-Cuves, the great Manche festival (Normandy)

From May 22 to 24, the Papillons de Nuit Festival brings together more than 50,000 festival-goers in the small village of Saint-Laurent-de-Cuves, in southern Manche. Born in 2001 and powered by 1,700 volunteers, it has established itself in two decades as one of Normandy's major contemporary music festivals — independent and responsible. Eclectic programme (rock, pop, electro, chanson, rap), campsite and festival village in the heart of the Norman bocage: a rural roots and a fidelity to the associative spirit that define its identity.

FIMU in Belfort, a thousand musicians from forty countries (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté)

From May 21 to 24, FIMU — International University Music Festival turns Belfort into the world capital of student music. Over 1,000 amateur musicians from some forty countries take over the city's streets, squares and stages to offer more than 220 free concerts in four days. Founded in 1986, it is one of Europe's largest free festivals — and a format with no real equivalent. A guest country is honoured each year. Worth a trip for the energy, the cultural mix and the off-the-beaten-track programming.

24 Heures de l'INSA in Villeurbanne, France's biggest student festival (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes)

From May 22 to 24, the La Doua campus in Villeurbanne hosts the 24 Heures de l'INSA. For over 50 years this student festival — the largest in France — has offered three days and two nights of concerts, legendary endurance races (bike, kart, pedal car), shows and free daytime activities. Some twenty artists on three stages, more than 80 free events and a closing fireworks display. An atypical format that captures the spirit of the French campus.

International Garden Festival, Chaumont-sur-Loire (Centre-Val de Loire)

Until November 1, the International Garden Festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire showcases at the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire the world's largest laboratory of contemporary garden design. Since 1992, some twenty ephemeral gardens crafted by international landscape designers are deployed around a theme renewed each edition. To explore this Pentecost weekend when the gardens are in full spring bloom, complemented by the contemporary Saison d'Art in the château and grounds — a full day on this Unesco-listed site.

Foire du Trône in Paris, France's oldest fairground (Île-de-France)

Until May 25, the Foire du Trône is in full swing on the Pelouse de Reuilly, in the Bois de Vincennes. Born in 957, it is France's oldest travelling fairground and one of Europe's largest: 250 rides and stalls over 10 hectares, close to 3 million visitors over two months. Thrill rides, classics (bumper cars, big wheel, hook-a-duck), candy floss and churros: an absolute popular classic, which closes its gates on Whit Monday. The last weekend to enjoy it.

Festival Andalou in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Spain in the Basque Country (Nouvelle-Aquitaine)

From May 21 to 25, the Festival Andalou turns Saint-Jean-de-Luz into a slice of Andalusia. Thirty-plus editions in: flamenco, sevillanas, Spanish music, green and white casetas along the seafront, Andalusian Mass in Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, big parade in traditional costume. Five days of Iberian atmosphere on the French Basque coast, organised by the local Spanish community — one of the few festivals to pull off such an intense cultural transplant.

Pentecôtavic in Vic-Fezensac, the great Gascon feria (Occitanie)

From May 22 to 25, Pentecôtavic holds its Pentecost feria. It is one of the largest bullfighting feasts in the southwest: Landes-style races, corridas at the Joseph Fourniol arenas, free concerts, banda parades and street animation. Over 250 musicians, circus shows and an atmosphere that does not die down before 4 am: Vic-Fezensac vibrates for four full days. For those who love communal energy, red and white, and Gascon bullfighting culture — controversial but deeply rooted.

Le Jardin du Michel in Dommartin-lès-Toul, Grand Est indie heavyweight (Grand Est)

From May 22 to 24, Le Jardin du Michel brings together more than 20,000 festival-goers in Dommartin-lès-Toul, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. Born in 2005 at the bottom of Michel's garden in Bulligny, this contemporary music festival has become one of the most emblematic in the Grand Est: eclectic line-up (rock, electro, hip-hop, reggae, world), festival campsite, family-friendly and independent vibe led by the SCIC Turbul'lance. A fully assumed alternative scene half an hour from Nancy.

Les 3 Éléphants in Laval, the Mayenne flagship (Pays de la Loire)

From May 21 to 25, Les 3 Éléphants takes over central Laval for five days of contemporary music and street arts. Created in 1998 in Lassay-les-Châteaux and based in Laval since 2010, this festival is run by the Poc Pok association and draws close to 38,000 festival-goers each year. The twist: more than 65 % of the programme is free, deployed in some twenty venues across the historic centre. A singular format that mixes a national-grade stage and accessible street scene — a model festival ecosystem.
