From Sancerre wines to Perche Highland Games: our Centre-Val de Loire Pentecost notebook

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

Sancerre wine fair, Highland Games at Thiron-Gardais, snail festival in Berry and flower-float parade in Aigurande: 12 well-rooted picks for Pentecost in Centre-Val de Loire.

Three days of Pentecost in Centre-Val de Loire is a chance to seek out what is most typical of the region: the great Sancerre vineyard in celebration, lively Berry popular traditions, chamber music in Cistercian abbeys, flower-float parades and a Celtic festival deep in the Perche. Our pick this week: the Sancerre Wine Fair, which marks Pentecost in the Centre's wine capital in an authentic winegrower atmosphere, and the Cel'Thiron Festival for its Celtic gamble in the heart of Eure-et-Loir.

Sancerre Wine Fair: the great winegrower celebration of the Centre (Cher)

On May 23 and 24, the Sancerre Wine Fair brings winegrowers, producers and enthusiasts together in the town centre of this winegrowing capital. Over two days, AOC Sancerre and Pouilly tastings, oenology workshops, meetings with winegrowers and concerts give the hilltop town the atmosphere of a great winegrower festival. One of the rare Pentecost gatherings where the terroir speaks for itself: you taste, you chat, you walk up the medieval streets with a glass in hand. Family-friendly or expert, the welcome is broad.

International Garden Festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire (Loir-et-Cher)

Running since April 22 through November 1, the International Garden Festival of Chaumont-sur-Loire is the world's largest laboratory for contemporary garden creation. Since 1992, around twenty ephemeral gardens designed by international landscape architects and designers take over the estate around a yearly theme. The season is in full swing by Pentecost weekend, and attendance is known to be very gentle. Allow half a day to wander through the plots, the international vegetable garden and the Loire riverbanks.

Cheverny Hat Festival: high millinery at the château (Loir-et-Cher)

On May 23 and 24 at the Château de Cheverny, the Hat Festival brings together the leading milliners of France and Europe around the art of hat-making. Sale exhibition, fashion shows of women's and men's creations, meetings with artisans: a one-of-a-kind event in France in a prestigious setting. The format combines pure aesthetic pleasure and the chance to acquire fine pieces, sometimes for weddings or horse races. Worth recommending even to the curious who never wear a hat day-to-day — you rarely see this kind of craft brought together.

Cel'Thiron Pentecost Festival: Highland Games in the Perche (Eure-et-Loir)

From May 24 to 26 at Thiron-Gardais Abbey, the Cel'Thiron Pentecost Festival celebrates Celtic and Scottish culture in a format unique to the Centre region. French Highland Games championships (caber toss, Scottish hammer), Highland Dance, Celtic music concerts, artisan market, bagpipe demonstrations and clans in kilts: for three days the abbey grounds run on Scottish time. A picturesque format but seriously documented on tradition, well suited to fest-noz lovers as much as to curious families.

Aigurande Pentecost Fair: flower floats and pilgrimage (Indre)

From May 23 to 26, the town of Aigurande in southern Indre holds its traditional Pentecost Fair. Funfair, great parade of illuminated flower floats on Sunday, traditional fair on Monday and pilgrimage to the Notre-Dame chapel on Tuesday: one of the last great Pentecost gatherings in Berry to keep such popular and religious scope. The floats are prepared months in advance by local associations. A rare dive into rural French festive culture.

Pentecôte en Berry at Chassignolles: chamber music at the Grange aux Pianos (Indre)

From May 23 to 25, Pentecôte en Berry takes over the Grange aux Pianos in Chassignolles, in the Berry country of George Sand. Directed by pianist Cyril Huvé, the festival presents chamber music concerts and recitals in a converted barn housing five pianos and an exceptional music library. One of the most singular settings in France for piano up close. Intimate format, hand-picked artists: a good fit for any classical music lover seeking a rural and demanding setting.

Baule d'Airs: brass band and street arts in the Loiret

From May 22 to 24, Baule d'Airs holds its new edition on the church square in Baule, near Orléans. A brass band and street arts gathering, the festival features ten or so bands and as many artistic companies blending acoustic music, street theatre, circus, dance and outdoor parades. Run by the L'Embouchure association and some 200 volunteers, it is a warm, easy-going format, ideal for anyone who likes drifting from one show to the next all day without a strict programme.

Bringuenbeauce Festival: young talents and headliner in Beauce (Eure-et-Loir)

On May 22 and 23 in Bailleau-Armenonville, the Bringuenbeauce Festival returns for two evenings of contemporary music. Founded in 2008 by the Regard Culturel association, this discovery festival runs on a simple format: a Friday-night showcase for emerging bands, a Saturday concert by an established artist with a local opening act. Family atmosphere, well-curated pop-rock-folk programming, gentle prices. The kind of event you support because it does its scouting work far from the big stages.

Manger Sain et Local Festival in Amboise (Indre-et-Loire)

On Saturday May 23 at the Amboise Agricultural and Wine High School (EDUCAVERT), the Manger Sain et Local Festival brings together organic producers, market gardeners, winegrowers and local artisans around responsible food. Tasting stands, cookery workshops, talks on short supply chains and sustainable development, kids' activities: an educational format that does not preach. A good outing for families who want to understand where their food comes from in concrete terms, and for foodies curious about Touraine products rarely found in supermarkets.

Montoire-sur-le-Loir Fair: wines, cheeses and tradition (Loir-et-Cher)

On Sunday May 24, the Montoire-sur-le-Loir Fair takes over Place Clemenceau and Boulevard des Alliés. A commercial fair heir to a centuries-old tradition, this Pentecost gathering emphasises local wines and cheeses, crafts, neighbourhood trade and Loir associations. A day typical of French patron-saint celebrations as they existed before mass distribution eclipsed them. A good plan for soaking up a Loire village atmosphere without forced exoticism.

Lumas Festival in Uzay-le-Venon: the snail in the spotlight (Cher)

From May 23 to 25, the Lumas Festival celebrates the snail (« lumas » in Berry dialect) in Uzay-le-Venon. Tastings, producer and artisan market, concerts, flea market and family activities: one of those small gastronomic festivals of terroir that survive thanks to the commitment of local festival committees. Authentic format, village atmosphere, simple but well-prepared dishes. An ideal plan for those wanting to taste Pentecost in Berry in its least touristy version.

Festivox in Château-Renard: free music on the Île du Vieux Pont (Loiret)

On May 23 and 24, Festivox takes over the Île du Vieux Pont in Château-Renard for two days of free programming. Created in 1996 by the Vox Populi association, this popular and intergenerational festival defends a demanding, hybrid programme mixing French chanson, rock, pop and world music, by the banks of the Ouanne river. Militant format (free entry assumed), musical demand, family atmosphere: a model of associative festival that has held strong for thirty years. A good fit for families and lovers of unpretentious musical discovery.
