Cannes Film Festival on the Croisette, centuries-old Saint-Tropez Bravade, Camargue nature and Cassis wine fete: seven concentrated but striking events for Ascension weekend in the French Riviera.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur plays intensity over volume this week. Only seven festivals on the Ascension long-weekend bill — but what a line-up: the world's leading film festival in Cannes, a Saint-Tropez bravade running uninterrupted since 1558, the Rhône delta in full birdwatching mode and Cassis wine on the harbour. Our pick this week: the Saint-Tropez Bravade, which on Saturday and Sunday turns the old village's alleys into living theatre of armed pageantry, light years from the summer glitz.
Cannes Film Festival, world cinema on the Croisette (Alpes-Maritimes)
From May 12 to 23, the Cannes International Film Festival enters its second weekend — the densest stretch for Official Selection premieres. The Palais des Festivals hosts the Palme d'Or competition, Un Certain Regard and the Directors' Fortnight, while the famous red carpet steps see a dozen ascents per day. For the public: Cannes Cinéma offers community accreditation, Cinémas de la Plage screens classics free of charge each evening facing the sea, and the city runs free open-air projections. Worth experiencing at least once, if only for the unique Croisette atmosphere in May.
Saint-Tropez Bravade, 468 years of armed tradition (Var)
From May 16 to 18, the Saint-Tropez Bravade honours Saint Torpes, the town's first martyr and patron saint. Armed processions in period costume, musket and cannon salvos, parades led by drums and fifes: since 1558, on every May 16, 17 and 18, the old village literally erupts. The bravadeurs in red-white-and-blue uniforms carry the saint's reliquary bust through the cobbled lanes amid a dense but respectful crowd. The most authentic expression of Tropezian identity, a world away from the jet-set imagery of summer. Free, open to all — just arrive early to find a spot.
Camargue and Rhône Delta Festival (Bouches-du-Rhône)
From May 13 to 17, the Camargue and Rhône Delta Festival takes over Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer for its 18th edition. Organised by the Camargue Regional Natural Park, it offers more than a hundred nature outings: birdwatching for flamingos and herons, horseback rides across the manades, canoe trips through the lagoons, wildlife documentary screenings, ecology talks and a large bird village in the Jardins de la Tour. A perfect family day in direct contact with one of the most striking Mediterranean ecosystems. Most outings require prior registration.
Cassis Fête son Vin, France's first AOC celebrates 90 years (Bouches-du-Rhône)
On May 16 and 17, Cassis Fête son Vin takes over Place Baragnon to celebrate one of France's oldest appellations d'origine contrôlée, recognised back in 1936. The programme follows an almost ritual choreography: mass at Saint-Michel church, the dance of the vine stock, blessing of the wine by fire, a confraternity parade and a major tasting market where the thirteen estates of AOC Cassis pour their mineral whites and rosés. Backdrop: the harbour and the calanques cliffs. A human-scale format, perfect for discovering a confidential terroir just ten kilometres from Marseille.
Les Artgricoles, committed countryside festival in Guillestre (Hautes-Alpes)
From May 15 to 17, Les Artgricoles returns for its 11th edition along the campsite road in Guillestre, in the Queyras massif. Run by the L'Échoooo association, this rural festival blends concerts (folk, French chanson, world music), street performances, walking parades, open-air screenings, visual art exhibitions and a large market of local producers and craftspeople. Two founding values: access to culture for all (pay-what-you-can model) and support for mountain farming. At 1,000 metres of altitude between the Durance valley and the gates of the Écrins National Park, this is one of the rare festive dates of the southern Alps for this weekend.
Gap Foire Expo, the great Hautes-Alpes showcase
From May 8 to 17, Gap Foire Expo wraps its ten-day run at the Parc de la Pépinière on Avenue Maréchal Foch. More than 200 exhibitors present housing, gastronomy, crafts, automotive and new technologies — local economy in miniature, attracting nearly 70,000 visitors each year. The closing Ascension weekend adds a gastronomy village (alpine producers, cheesemakers, craft breweries), kids' activities and several evening concerts. Free entry, easy parking: a Gap springtime classic.
Toulon Region Music Festival, the year-round classical agenda (Var)
The Toulon and Region Music Festival runs continuously from March to September — making it one of the six oldest French classical festivals (founded 1951) and the only one to operate year-round. Several concerts fall across the Ascension weekend in heritage venues across Toulon and its metropolitan area: chamber music, recitals, lyric voices. Check the weekly programme on the official site — an excellent gateway into Mediterranean classical music, in carefully chosen architectural settings and with reasonable ticket prices.
The intimate format of this Provençal weekend also leaves room for pure tourism: the Esterel coastal path, a calanques trip, a paraglide flight over the Verdon. For more regional weekend picks, head to our national agenda. Enjoy the Ascension long weekend, and make the most of the Mediterranean sun.
