Les 3 Éléphants in Laval, Festival de l'Épau and the Cadre Noir: Loire region this weekend

Les 3 Éléphants in Laval, Festival de l'Épau in Le Mans, Saint Jazz sur Vie in Vendée: 11 picks across the Loire region for Pentecost weekend May 22-24, 2026.

The Loire region has a particularly busy Pentecost weekend, with two regional heavyweights running side by side: Les 3 Éléphants in Laval (38,000 festival-goers) and the Festival de l'Épau in Le Mans which once again takes over its 13th-century royal abbey. Add two Vendée jazz festivals, a major Le Mans circus event, the creative edge of hip-hop dance in Angers and several rural gems: this is a region playing as a team. Our pick this week: the 6 Heures de Sainte-Suzanne, a footrace at the foot of a listed medieval town — a format rare in France.

Les 3 Éléphants in Laval: 38,000 festival-goers in the city centre (Mayenne)

From May 21 to 25, Les 3 Éléphants take over some twenty venues in central Laval for their 2026 edition. Born in 1998 in Lassay-les-Châteaux and based in Laval since 2010, the festival run by the Poc Pok association mixes contemporary music and street arts, with more than 65% of free programming. Headliners, sharp discoveries, open city stages and off-the-walls formats: an average of 38,000 people converge on the Mayenne prefecture, which becomes for five days one of the largest musical gatherings in western France. Urban format, carefully worked accessibility.

Festival de l'Épau: classical music in Le Mans' royal abbey (Sarthe)

From May 19 to 27, the Festival de l'Épau offers around thirty concerts in the royal abbey founded in 1229 by Queen Berengaria of Navarre. Created in 1982 at the initiative of the Sarthe department, this is one of western France's major classical music events: soloist recitals, chamber music, symphonic concerts and contemporary creations, in remarkable Cistercian acoustics. Several major events fall during the Pentecost weekend. Book in advance, Saturday night slots go fast.

Saint Jazz sur Vie in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie: Pentecost jazz on the Vendée coast (Vendée)

From May 22 to 24, Saint Jazz sur Vie brings Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie to life for its traditional Pentecost gathering. Based since 1984 in the picturesque setting of the Conserverie, a former fish cannery converted into a performance hall, this festival mixes prestigious concerts with musical strolls through the streets. Three days that turn this Vendée resort into a regional jazz capital, with a loyal audience that comes back every year. Reasonable pricing, careful programming, mid-format that sacrifices neither quality nor accessibility.

Le Mans fait son Cirque: contemporary circus creation (Sarthe)

From May 20 to 31, Le Mans fait son Cirque offers a snapshot of contemporary circus creation on the Newton promenade and under the marquees. Created in 2002 by Le Plongeoir, National Circus Hub of Le Mans, the festival programmes around twenty shows, concerts and professional meetings. With more than 27,000 spectators on average, it is one of western France's major circus events. Pentecost weekend concentrates several family shows and demanding adult creations — choose carefully according to your audience.

Cadre Noir Galas in Saumur: haute école and UNESCO heritage (Maine-et-Loire)

Several Galas of the Cadre Noir of Saumur punctuate the weekend on the historic Terrefort site. Heir to a tradition born in 1815 and inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage, the Cadre Noir presents haute école figures, airs above the ground and long-rein work in galas choreographed to music. The Printemps des Écuyers runs in May-June: one of the best moments to see the riders in public action. Booking essential, limited seats.

Les Musicales de Noirmoutier: chamber music on the island (Vendée)

From May 22 to 24, Les Musicales de Noirmoutier propose a series of chamber concerts and recitals in the island's heritage venues — medieval castle, churches, salt marshes. Programming that mixes classical repertoire and more contemporary creations, regional ensembles and guest soloists. Intimate format, in tune with the singularity of the island site. Combine with a free day on the island — the crossing via the Gois passage remains a unique experience.

Les Rhinos Féroces in Montaigu-Vendée: punk rock and DIY (Vendée)

On May 22 and 23, Les Rhinos Féroces shake the Zinor in Montaigu-Vendée for its annual punk rock and hardcore appointment. Born in 2015 from the passion of the Réglisse association, this festival mixes international bands and emerging talents in an unapologetic DIY spirit: craft beers, silk-screen printing, extended-family vibe of Vendée's punk scene. Not mainstream programming, but one of the best of its kind in western France. For genre lovers.

Générations Break in Angers: breaking and hip-hop culture (Maine-et-Loire)

From May 21 to 24, Générations Break offers at the Quai-CDN of Angers and at the CNDC four days of breaking, hip-hop, shows, participatory workshops, parade, screenings and round tables. Built with choreographer Bruce Chiefare and born in 2024 as part of the Cultural Olympiad, this festival questions the border between sport and stage creation. Sharp format yet open to general audiences — a must-see if you followed breaking's arrival at the Olympics.

6 Hours of Sainte-Suzanne: nature race at the foot of a medieval town (Mayenne)

On Saturday May 23, the 6 Hours of Sainte-Suzanne gather runners and trailers in the medieval town listed as a Petite Cité de Caractère of Mayenne. Six-hour timed race in solo or teams of 2 to 4, two courses to choose from («Trail Spirit» for experienced runners, «Nature Race» more accessible): one of the most singular sporting formats in western France, in a heritage setting without equivalent. Nearly 2,000 participants expected. Spectators welcome to cheer at the start-finish village.

A Sunday with Brassens in Chailland: French chanson in the open air (Mayenne)

On Sunday May 24, Un dimanche avec Brassens et Compagnie gathers around twenty amateur and professional bands in the village of Chailland, Pays d'Ernée. Created in 2012, this festival devotes Pentecost Sunday to performing the repertoire of Georges Brassens and the great names of French chanson — Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Barbara, Brel. Simple, accessible format, played in gardens, on the square and in the village pubs. A village festive day that carries weight, without showing off.

Festival Rock Solidaire La Scène de Fer in Héric: tributes and causes (Loire-Atlantique)

On May 23 and 24, La Scène de Fer returns to the Frenouelles sports complex in Héric, 20 km north of Nantes. A charity festival since 2022, it brings together tribute rock bands and local formations to raise funds for associations supporting hospitalised sick children. Simple format, affordable ticket, family and supportive atmosphere. A nice Nantes-area appointment for those who want to combine concerts and commitment.
