Jardin du Michel, NL Contest and Museums Night: 12 picks in eastern France this weekend

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

Jardin du Michel festival near Toul, NL Contest urban sports in Strasbourg, European Museums Night everywhere: our Grand Est selection for Pentecost weekend May 22-24.

Eastern France approaches the Pentecost long weekend with a dense agenda: a heavyweight of contemporary music near Toul, Europe's largest urban sports festival in Strasbourg, two European Museum Nights (Strasbourg and Mulhouse), two medieval festivals and three serious music dates. Our pick this week: the European Museum Night in its Mulhouse version, with ten museums in the metropolitan area open after dark — a free, dense format that remains too little known outside the region.

Le Jardin du Michel in Dommartin-lès-Toul: 20,000 festival-goers in the open air (Meurthe-et-Moselle)

From May 22 to 24, Le Jardin du Michel brings together over 20,000 people in Dommartin-lès-Toul for its new edition. Born in 2005 at the bottom of Michel's garden in Bulligny, this festival run by the SCIC Turbul'lance has become one of the most emblematic contemporary music events in eastern France. Eclectic programming mixing rock, electronic, hip-hop, reggae and world music, festival camping, local economy backing and serious environmental commitment: a human-scale large format that truly weighs in the regional landscape. Three days that often structure the calendar of music fans from Lorraine.

NL Contest in Strasbourg: Europe's largest urban sports festival (Bas-Rhin)

From May 22 to 24, the Skatepark de la Rotonde hosts the new edition of NL Contest. Born in 2005 by the Nouvelle Ligne association, this event has become Europe's largest festival of urban sports and culture: international roller, BMX, skateboard and freestyle scooter competitions, breaking battles, streetball, parkour, graffiti and live concerts. Three days of buzz, a young and international crowd, an unapologetic free-style atmosphere. Ideal for discovering Europe's urban scene at full throttle, in a city that has been betting on these disciplines for years.

European Museum Night in Strasbourg: 14 institutions after dark (Bas-Rhin)

On Saturday May 23, the Strasbourg Museum Night exceptionally opens 14 institutions until midnight — from the Palais Rohan to the MAMCS, from the Alsatian Museum to the BNU. Original guided tours, concerts, workshops, performances, screenings and playful trails turn the Alsatian capital into a free nocturnal cultural course. A dense format, best approached with a map in hand — impossible to do everything in one evening, focus on 3 or 4 chosen museums. An excellent entry point for those who never pushed certain doors.

European Museum Night in Mulhouse: ten museums in free access (Haut-Rhin)

The same evening, the Mulhouse Museum Night presents its collective edition with the ten museums of the territory: National Automobile Museum, Cité du Train, Electropolis, Écomusée d'Alsace, Museum of Printed Fabrics and other southern Alsace gems. Free format, inter-museum shuttle, special activities and behind-the-scenes openings: the Mulhouse version is one of the densest in France thanks to the singularity of its industrial and technical heritage. Very suitable for families with teenagers — particularly the Car + Train combo.

Under the banners of Châteaux & Légendes at Hohlandsbourg (Haut-Rhin)

Launched on May 8, the Châteaux & Légendes Festival presents at the Château du Hohlandsbourg in Wintzenheim a nighttime walking show staged by Jim Danton with John Howe, artistic director of The Lord of the Rings. Several performances take place during the Pentecost weekend. Ambitious format, careful scenography and serious work on lighting: this is the most spectacular event of the Alsatian spring in the category of heritage night shows. Booking essential, limited seats per evening.

La Médiévale de Liverdun: hilltop town in medieval garb (Meurthe-et-Moselle)

On Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24, La Médiévale de Liverdun gathers over 500 costumed re-enactors in the medieval town perched above the Moselle. Twenty editions under the belt, mounted parades, sword fights, minstrels, troubadours, ancient craft demonstrations and seasonal markets: one of the major living history events in the region. Exceptional setting, 20 minutes from Nancy, perfect for a family day out.

La Ronde des Feux in Chaource: fire arts and ceramics (Aube)

On May 23 and 24, La Ronde des Feux gathers over 200 artists on the heritage site of the Poteries of Chaource for Pentecost weekend. Ceramists, blacksmiths, bronze-casters, sculptors, visual artists and young talents share a singular format around the arts of fire: demonstrations, workshops, exhibitions and spectacular performances. A rare festival in France, led by the Artitude 10 association since 2001, worth seeing once to understand how these crafts keep reinventing themselves.

Marly Jazz Festival: four nights of intimate jazz (Moselle)

From May 21 to 24, the Marly Jazz Festival presents four concerts at the Espace Culturel Le NEC in Marly, near Metz. Run by the MME association and the Town of Marly, the festival has bet since the early 2000s on headliner quality and venue intimacy rather than scale. A demanding jazz programme, to enjoy in a club format without fighting for your seat. For real connoisseurs.

Forbach Gypsy Jazz Festival: the Django legacy (Moselle)

On May 23 and 24, the Forbach Gypsy Jazz Festival takes place at the Burghof Congress Centre. Simple format: free daytime concerts and paid evening sets with internationally renowned artists, all heirs to Django Reinhardt's tradition. Compact format, family atmosphere, one of the best swing and gypsy guitar appointments in eastern Moselle.

Gérardmer Motordays: Harleys, rock and Vosges mountain passes (Vosges)

From May 22 to 24, the Gérardmer Motordays bring together thousands of bikers at the foot of the La Mauselaine slopes, in the Vosges mountains. Official Harley-Davidson event open to all bikes, this festival mixes rock concerts under a giant marquee, choppers, bobbers and showbikes exhibitions, spectacular rides over the Vosges passes and pyrotechnic activities. Very warm atmosphere, open to non-bikers who enjoy the biker vibe and chromed engineering.

Vign'Art: land art in UNESCO-listed Champagne vineyards (Marne)

Launched on May 22, Vign'Art opens its 2026 season in the UNESCO-listed Champagne vineyards. A contemporary art and land art festival in the open air, it scatters around twenty ephemeral, free and 24/7-accessible works from Épernay to Reims and the Marne Valley. Itinerant format to be explored by car or bike, inviting you to discover the wine-growing villages from an unprecedented angle. A great option for a slow tourism weekend.

Beer Festival in Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne)

From May 22 to 24, the Châlons-en-Champagne Beer Festival takes over the Place de la République with 18 chalets, 56 beers on tap, concerts by local bands and three days of entirely free festive atmosphere. Created in 2022 by the Red Fish bar, this festival showcases Châlons bars and local breweries: a simple, popular and effective format that has quickly settled into the regional landscape.
