Vic-Fezensac feria, Aubrac transhumance and silent cinema in Anères: Occitanie at Pentecost

By Christophe Contard — Éditeur web indépendant

Thirteen departments, thirteen moods: Pentecôtavic in Vic-Fezensac, Aubrac transhumance, Gruissan festejades and silent cinema with live piano in Anères. Eleven picks to criss-cross Occitanie this weekend.

Occitanie is probably the French region where Pentecost still carries the most cultural weight. Not a single department without its highlight this weekend: Gascon feria, Occitan parades, Mediterranean kite festivals, ancestral transhumance, Catalan cherry fete. We've blended the patrimonially protected celebrations (Saint-Bourrou listed as intangible heritage, Unesco-inscribed transhumance) with the more curated ones (silent cinema in Anères, Argentine tango in Saint-Geniez-d'Olt). Our pick: the Festival d'Anères, where a 180-inhabitant village becomes for five days France's capital of silent cinema accompanied live on piano.

Pentecôtavic in Vic-Fezensac: the great South-West feria (Gers)

From May 22 to 25, Pentecôtavic turns Vic-Fezensac into one of France's bullfighting capitals. Landaise races and corridas at the Joseph Fourniol arena, over 250 bandas musicians, free concerts, parades, circus, non-stop activity: the town tips entirely into celebration for four days. One of the most respected ferias in south-west France, with an audience mixing seasoned aficionados and visitors drawn by the atmosphere. Free centre, ticketing for the arena.

Festejades de Gruissan: 50,000 people in Occitan (Aude)

The Festejades de Gruissan bring together nearly 50,000 people each Pentecost around Occitan culture and Mediterranean traditions. From May 23 to 25, the village becomes a vast open-air party: bodegas, concerts, brass bands, bandas, street shows, local cuisine. Twenty years of existence, a smoothly run operation, impeccably welcoming atmosphere. A great pick for those wanting an authentic Mediterranean weekend without falling into the tourist trap.

The Aubrac in Transhumance: Salers cows climbing to summer pastures (Aveyron)

Listed since 2020 as Unesco intangible cultural heritage, the Aubrac transhumance is arguably the most emblematic agricultural celebration in the Massif Central. L'Aubrac en Transhumance draws thousands of visitors from May 21 to 25 to watch Aubrac cows decked in flowers climbing to high pastures. Farm market, concerts, demonstrations, parades of decorated animals: the feast peaks on Sunday 24 and Monday 25, around Saint-Urbain's day.

Festival d'Anères: silent cinema, live piano (Hautes-Pyrénées)

Since 1998, the Festival d'Anères has turned a 180-inhabitant village into France's silent-cinema capital. From May 20 to 24, restored prints from the major European cinematheques are screened with live piano, organ or jazz accompaniment. An absolutely unique format in France, sharp programming (Murnau, Lang, Eisenstein…), intimate atmosphere. Affordable pricing, homestay options.

Cherry Festival and Bandas Festival in Céret (Pyrénées-Orientales)

Since 1995, the Cherry Festival and Bandas Festival celebrate on May 23-24 the iconic fruit of the Vallespir and Catalan music. Cherry growers, artisans, bandas, sardane dancers: Céret becomes a big free festive market for two days. Family-friendly by day, more festive in the evening. A typical reference point of Catalan art de vivre, 30 km from the Spanish border.

Argentine Tango Festival in Saint-Geniez-d'Olt: milongas in the cloister (Aveyron)

Since 2006, the Argentine Tango Festival has drawn dancers and musicians every May for six days to this small character-town of Aveyron. From May 20 to 25: classes for all levels, evening milongas, live orchestra concerts, workshops in the cloister on Place du Général de Gaulle. A rare and warm gathering, open to curious beginners and experienced tangueros alike. Book accommodation well ahead.

Cheese and Rocamadour PDO Festival (Lot)

Since 1992, the Cheese and Rocamadour PDO Festival brings together on May 24 farm producers and goat-cheese lovers at the Bois de Belveyre in Rocamadour. Exclusively dedicated to farm cheeses under protected designation, the day offers a market, tastings, a Rando-Biquette walk visiting goat farms, and cheese-making demonstrations. A remarkable showcase of Quercy goat-cheese craftsmanship in one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Les Natur'Ailes in Narbonne-Plage: giant kites by the sea (Aude)

Les Natur'Ailes is one of the great international kite festivals of the Mediterranean. From May 23 to 25, on the Narbonne-Plage seafront, acrobatic demonstrations, giant kite flights, freestyle competitions, kite-making workshops for kids: three days of spectacular aerial imagery, completely free. Kite fliers from around the world. An ideal family format for the Pentecost school break.

Pentecost Festival of Moissac (Tarn-et-Garonne)

The Pentecost Festival of Moissac is one of the great popular gatherings of Tarn-et-Garonne. From May 22 to 25, funfair, Rosière coronation, electro night for young people, free concerts and bandas parades follow each other at the foot of the Unesco-listed Romanesque abbey. The blend of tradition (Rosière) and modernity (electro night) gives this multi-generational feast, inherited from the 19th century, its character.

Festival Marée Haute in Lacaune: musical tide across south Tarn

Founded in 2023, the Festival Marée Haute is a roaming event that sweeps from May 22 to 25 across nine villages of southern Tarn around Lacaune. Concerts, street theatre, brass bands, musical walks, gastronomic moments: the programming bets on cultural nomadism in rural territory. Mostly free, openly volunteer-run, perfect for discovering the Monts de Lacaune.

Saint-Bourrou Festival in Marcillac-Vallon: the bud celebration (Aveyron)

Listed since 2013 as French intangible cultural heritage, the Saint-Bourrou Festival celebrates from May 23 to 25 the rebirth of the vine in the Vallon de Marcillac. Traditional Bourroumiers parade in costume, mass in Occitan, country meals, winegrowers' demonstrations: three days of a rare patronal feast deeply rooted in its AOC terroir. For those who prefer authenticity to grand spectacle.
