Mediterranean Festival in Ajaccio, Offenbach Sundays in Bastia, polyphonies in Bonifacio: our honest pick of late-May island events.
A quiet but living late-May weekend on the island
Let's be upfront: the weekend of May 30-31, 2026 is not Corsica's tourist peak. Patron-saint feasts have barely started, and the major summer festivals (Festivoce in Pigna, Aiò in Ajaccio, the Polyphonic Encounters of Calvi) only kick off in July or September. Still, the island is not asleep. Our editorial favourite this week goes to Ajaccio, where the 5th Mediterranean Festival turns Square Trottel and the Tino Rossi marina into an open-air environmental platform for two days. Bastia answers with two very different musical evenings at the Palais des Gouverneurs and the Spaziu Mantinum, while several villages run solidarity walks and Corsican-language workshops. If you're visiting, here is what's actually happening from Friday night to Sunday noon.
Mediterranean Festival, Ajaccio (May 28-31)
Fifth edition for this free event organised by the City of Ajaccio and the Mare Vivu association, fully dedicated to Mediterranean Sea protection. Festival HQ takes over Square Trottel and the Tino Rossi marina from Thursday May 28 to Sunday May 31, 2026. Saturday May 30 is the densest day: « Plastic pollution in the Mediterranean » conference at 10am, scientific boat tours of Mare Vivu and Stareso vessels from 2 to 5pm, « Cigarette butts impact » roundtable at 6pm, open-air Ciné'Mare screening at 9pm. Sunday May 31: beach cleanup with Corsica Clean Nature 9-11am, last boat tours 10am-12pm, and a symbolic departure of the 11th CorSeaCare mission at noon. Workshop-conference format rather than concerts, but this is the major event in the Ajaccio area.
Quatuor Debussy Gypsic at the Palais des Gouverneurs, Bastia (Friday May 29)
Technically the eve of the weekend, but worth flagging as the entry-point to Bastia's musical line-up. Friday May 29, 2026 at 9pm, the Renaissance courtyard of the Palais des Gouverneurs hosts the Debussy Quartet in their Gypsic programme — a virtuoso ride from Dvořák to Sarasate, laced with gypsy accents. The Lyon-based string quartet, internationally respected, picks the citadel's most striking acoustic setting for a programme that blends classical rigour with Balkan popular energy. Tickets 20 €, limited capacity due to the outdoor setup. Reservations through the municipal box office.
The Offenbach Sundays at Spaziu Mantinum, Bastia (Sunday May 31)
The other Bastia rendezvous closes the weekend, Sunday May 31, 2026 at 9pm at the Spaziu Mantinum. This concert-lecture from the Offenbach Sundays series brings back to life some fifty operettas by the Franco-German composer, under the artistic direction of Jean-Christophe Keck — the world reference on Offenbach's work and his great-great-grandson. On stage: singers Julia Knecht and Charles Mesrine, pianist Diego Mingolla, and a commented reading of the most famous arias (La Belle Hélène, La Vie Parisienne, Orpheus in the Underworld). Intimate format, perfect to discover a lesser-known Offenbach beyond the usual hits.
Armelle Solidarity Walk, Place Saint-Nicolas, Bastia (Sunday May 31)
For those who'd rather move than sit through a concert, the Armelle association runs its annual solidarity walk on Sunday May 31, 2026 at Place Saint-Nicolas in Bastia. Sign-ups from 9am, group departure at 10am, entry fee 20 €. The route is family-friendly — not a race — and the proceeds fund the association's actions for hospitalised children with serious illnesses in Corsica. The kind of event that won't make national headlines but consistently draws several hundred walkers to Bastia's finest esplanade, facing the port. A good entry-point if you're visiting and want to meet locals in a casual setting.
Corsican-language workshop at Casa di e Lingue, Bastia (Saturday May 30)
Saturday May 30, 2026 at 4pm, Casa di e Lingue in Bastia opens its doors for a free encounter around the Corsican language, one of the island's identity pillars. Casual format, accessible to beginners: introduction to Corsican structure, exchanges with linguists and speakers, practical demonstrations. Also a chance to visit this municipal venue dedicated to Mediterranean plurilingualism, opened in 2022 in the Vieux-Port district. For visitors looking past the postcard view to understand what's behind those bilingual road signs, it's a short but worthwhile detour.
The Polyphonic Thursdays of Bonifacio (April-October season)
The recurring event that anchors the cultural season at the island's southern tip. The Polyphonic Thursdays of Bonifacio programme a concert every Thursday evening from April to October in the Saint-Dominique church of the Haute-Ville. No concert this exact weekend — the next Thursday falls on June 4 — but worth flagging if you extend your stay. Around thirty evenings per season, more than ten Corsican polyphonic groups (Una Fiara Nova, L'Alba, A Filetta, Choir of Sartène…), and the acoustics of a 13th-century Dominican church. Ticket around 20 €, sold at the municipal tourist office. Probably the best entry into Corsican polyphony in a traditional setting, away from the summer festival crowds.
Looking ahead: Festivoce, Calvi, Aiò
Our pick wouldn't be complete without flagging the three major summer rendezvous now opening box offices. Festivoce, in Pigna (Balagne), celebrates polyphony and world music from July 15 to 18, 2026 in the village-theatre built by the Acquaviva brothers. Aiò Festival, July 28 to August 2 at the Casone open-air theatre in Ajaccio, runs a mainstream line-up this year with Jean-Louis Aubert, Vanessa Paradis, Gims and PLK — tickets from 39 €. And the Polyphonic Encounters of Calvi, in September inside the citadel, remain the great international gathering of a cappella singing, with ensembles from the Basque Country, Sardinia, the Balkans, and of course Corsica.
Also worth noting
- Porto-Vecchio Upper Town Sunday market — every Sunday morning, local producers, charcuterie, cheese, honey and crafts (May to September).
- Pianottoli-Caldarello market — Saturday mornings 8am-1pm, Corsican producers and artisans (May to September).
- Julie Canarelli photo exhibition at the Bastia Museum — last day on May 29, catch it on Friday if you're around.
Wrap-up
An island weekend leaning environmental and musical rather than folkloric: Ajaccio plays the green card with its Mediterranean Festival, Bastia bets on two contrasting classical evenings, and the villages stay quiet ahead of the summer rush. No mass event, but well-sized rendezvous to discover the island off-season. Plan ahead with our weekend agenda or browse other French regions this same weekend.
