30 Potiers sous les Halles: A Celebration of Ceramics in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne

Every two years in December, the magnificent 15th-century medieval market hall of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne hosts 30 Potiers sous les Halles, an event dedicated to ceramics and craft arts. Organised by the ARTIS collective, an association of craft art professionals based in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, this pottery market has become an unmissable event for ceramics and fine craft enthusiasts in the Ain department and beyond.

An Exceptional Heritage Setting

Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, a medieval town awarded the Ville et Métiers d'Art label, provides an ideal setting for the event. The timber-framed market hall, listed as a historic monument, dates back to the 15th century and stands as one of the finest examples of medieval merchant architecture in the region. Beneath its imposing roof structure, the potters' stalls settle into an atmosphere that is both authentic and warm, just days before the holiday season.

Thirty Outstanding Ceramic Artists

Each edition brings together around thirty professional ceramicists selected by the ARTIS collective for the quality and originality of their work. The techniques on display are remarkably diverse: stoneware, porcelain, raku, glazed earthenware, faience, slip, wood firing and many more. Creations range from functional and culinary pottery to decorative pieces and contemporary sculptures, offering a comprehensive overview of French artisan ceramics.

Visitors can speak directly with the artisans, discover their techniques and expertise, and sometimes attend live wheel-throwing and modelling demonstrations.

A Themed Competition and Prizes

Each edition features a themed competition where every participating potter presents a unique piece. The 2025 edition's theme was "The pitcher in all its forms". Three prizes are awarded during the day:

  • The People's Choice Award: visitors vote for their favourite piece and the draw winner takes home the winning work
  • The ARTIS Prize: awarded by the collective's members
  • The Mayor's Prize: a personal favourite chosen by the Town of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne

A Warm End-of-Year Atmosphere

Beyond ceramics, 30 Potiers sous les Halles is a moment of conviviality and sharing. The event offers crêpes, mulled wine and sweet treats, in a festive atmosphere heralding the Christmas holidays. Admission is free and the event draws more than 4,000 visitors at each edition, coming from the Ain, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire departments and beyond.
