Theater and performing arts festival in Saint-Girons and Couserans
Theatrales en Couserans was born from the desire to promote performing arts in the Pyrenean valleys of Ariege. Organized by an association dedicated to promoting theater in rural areas, it brings performances closer to the inhabitants of Couserans, this ancient Pyrenean province with its 18 valleys. The festival is not limited to Saint-Girons: it takes over village halls, churches, village squares, and heritage sites throughout Couserans to create encounters between professional artists and the local public.
The programming of Theatrales en Couserans is guided by a concern for artistic excellence and accessibility. The invited companies, all professional, come from the Occitanie region and all over France. The repertoire encompasses all forms of performing arts: classical and contemporary theater, puppetry, circus, dance, object theater, and hybrid forms. The program is balanced between works by established authors—both French and foreign—contemporary creations, and shows for young audiences, ensuring something for all generations.
Each season of Theatrales explores contemporary themes that resonate with the audience's concerns. Recent editions have addressed issues of exile with works like "La Langue des Papillons" on the Spanish Civil War, and romantic upheavals with shows like "Le Cyrano des Crues," "Peronnille," or "Lettre d'une inconnue." These universal themes, presented through inventive staging, allow theater to fulfill its role as a mirror of society, even in the heart of the Pyrenean mountains.
Les Theatrales en Couserans play an essential role in the cultural life of Couserans. By offering a quality theatrical season in a rural mountain area, they help combat cultural desertification and maintain access to performing arts for everyone. The performances are accompanied by meet-and-greets with artists, post-show discussions, and workshops that enrich the audience's experience and build lasting connections between the companies and the local public.
Les Theatrales en Couserans returns for a new season in 2026. The festival will offer a program of theater, puppetry, circus, and dance in the halls and heritage sites of Saint-Girons and Couserans.
