Sound and light show on the Saint-Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral
“Beauvais, The Infinite Cathedral” is a sound and light show projected at nightfall on the facades of the Saint-Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral, which has the tallest Gothic choir in the world. Created by the agency Skertzo, this free show, lasting about thirty minutes, retraces the unfinished history of this audacious edifice through a poetic and musical narration. Presented every summer since 2012, it has attracted nearly 200,000 spectators. In 2025, the cathedral's 800th anniversary was celebrated by a monumental mapping.
Since 2012, the Saint-Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral has lit up every summer with a grandiose sound and light show. “Beauvais, The Infinite Cathedral”, created by the agency Skertzo, projects a poetic, luminous, and musical narrative onto the facades of the edifice, retracing the history of this extraordinary cathedral.
The Saint-Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral boasts the tallest Gothic choir in the world, reaching 48.5 meters under its vault. Construction began in 1225, and it was never completed: its nave was not built, and its transept remains an architectural feat that defies the laws of gravity. The show pays homage to this unfinished history and the audacity of its builders.
For about thirty minutes, the facades of the cathedral become a monumental screen. Colorful light projections, accompanied by an original soundtrack blending music and narration, tell the story of the construction phases, collapses, reconstructions, and the dreams of the builders. The audience, seated on the parvis, experiences an immersive and emotional journey at the foot of this exceptional monument.
The year 2025 marked a turning point with the celebration of the cathedral's 800th anniversary. An ambitious artistic and cultural program accompanied this anniversary throughout the year, featuring exhibitions, concerts, performances, and artist residencies. The highlight was the monumental mapping “Between Heaven and Earth”, projected onto the Gothic facade in December 2025, transforming the cathedral into a living work of art.
As part of the 800th-anniversary celebrations, the Cathedral Nights offered exceptional nocturnal shows combining projections, music, and artistic performances. These events attracted a considerable audience and strengthened Beauvais' cultural influence at the national level.
The show is completely free and accessible to all. It is traditionally held on Friday and Saturday evenings in July and August, and on Saturday evenings in September. This free access has allowed the show to attract nearly 200,000 spectators since its creation, making The Infinite Cathedral one of the most popular summer events in the Hauts-de-France region.
