Historical sound and light show at the Château de Maintenon
The Spectacle Nocturne du Château de Maintenon, titled 'En Nocturne', is a summer sound and light show that retraces the history of Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon, secret wife of Louis XIV. At dusk, the castle facades — the Châtelet, the Logis, and the Donjon — light up with monumental projections by visual artist Xavier de Richemont, while two actors guide the audience through the French gardens designed by Le Nôtre. Vauban's unfinished aqueduct serves as a grand backdrop for this historical evocation.
Every summer, the Château de Maintenon offers an exceptional night show that transports spectators back to the time of Louis XIV. Titled 'En Nocturne', this sound and light show tells in three acts the extraordinary rise of Françoise d'Aubigné, born in prison and became Marquise de Maintenon, governess of the royal children, and then secret wife of the Sun King. Visual artist Xavier de Richemont is responsible for the monumental projections that blend with the architecture of the three castle facades.
The evening unfolds in two parts. First, two actors welcome the audience in the newly recreated French gardens and invite them to discover the history of the estate through humorous and lively historical sketches. This theatrical walk through the gardens designed by André Le Nôtre allows visitors to admire the embroidered flowerbeds and the remarkable perspectives of the park.
Then, at nightfall, the actual sound and light show unfolds on the castle facades. The three acts — the Châtelet, the Logis, and the Donjon — are illuminated in turn by monumental video projections, sound effects, and music that retrace the fabulous life of Madame de Maintenon, from her birth in prison in Niort to her secret marriage to the King of France.
The natural setting of the show is enhanced by the majestic presence of the unfinished Maintenon aqueduct, a monumental work commissioned by Louis XIV to Vauban to divert the waters of the Eure to Versailles. Its imposing arches, visible from the castle gardens, form a grandiose and historically rich backdrop for the night show. This juxtaposition of the castle, gardens, and aqueduct makes the show a unique heritage experience.
The show is presented from Tuesday to Saturday during the summer, with staggered departures from 6:30 PM for the guided theatrical tour and 9:00 PM for the sound and light show. The entire experience lasts about two hours in an intimate and immersive atmosphere, by candlelight and under the starry sky of Beauce.
