The Mont-Louis Livestock Fair: Pastoral tradition in the Vauban citadel

Mont-Louis, the highest fortified town in France (1,600 m altitude), hosts its traditional Livestock Fair every year. This ancestral agricultural event perpetuates the tradition of large mountain fairs where livestock was traded before winter, marking the descent of herds from the Pyrenean summer pastures.

An agricultural and friendly gathering

The fair brings together cattle and sheep breeders from Cerdagne, Capcir, and Haut-Conflent for the presentation and trade of animals. Cows, calves, ewes, and horses are exhibited on the citadel's parade ground, in an exceptional setting classified as UNESCO World Heritage for its Vauban fortifications.

Producers' market and local products

Alongside the livestock fair itself, a producers' market offers Pyrenean regional specialties: mountain cheeses, cured meats, honeys, jams, and artisanal products. Demonstrations of traditional know-how and family activities complete the program.

A living heritage

The Mont-Louis fair is part of the long tradition of Cerdagne fairs, which have punctuated pastoral life for centuries. It is an opportunity to celebrate the link between humans, animals, and the mountain territory, in a spirit of transmission and conviviality.
