Abracadabulles was born from the passion of a handful of comic strip enthusiasts who wanted to create an event dedicated to the ninth art in Les Sables-d'Olonne. Since its first edition, the festival has continued to grow, attracting more renowned authors and building a loyal and ever-larger audience, while retaining the friendly, accessible, and festive spirit that is its hallmark. In twenty-five years, Abracadabulles has become a major cultural event in the Vendée region and a benchmark in the French comic strip festival landscape.

The Principle: A Theme, a Scenography, a Celebration

What sets Abracadabulles apart from most BD festivals is its principle of an annual theme. Each edition is placed under the sign of a universe—western, adventure, science fiction, historical period—which guides not only the choice of invited authors but also the scenography, activities, workshops, and the general atmosphere of the festival. This approach creates a coherent and immersive experience that delights both children and adults, and gives each edition its own identity, a strong personality.

In 2025, the theme of the Wild West — "Saloon Abracadabulles" — transformed the venue into a true American Western town, with its decorations, activities, and selection of Western and adventure comic strip authors. In 2026, the festival celebrates its 25th anniversary with the theme "Explorers and Adventurers (Indiana Croft)", blending cult adventure references with the exploration of the five continents.

Around Thirty Authors for Two Days of Meetings

The heart of the festival lies in the signing sessions. Around thirty authors—illustrators, scriptwriters, illustrators, mangakas—from France and Europe (Romania, Serbia, Italy, among others) are present over two days to sign their albums, meet their readers, and share their passion. This direct accessibility between creators and the public is a fundamental value of Abracadabulles: here, you can sit opposite your favorite author, talk about their work, understand their creative process, and get a stack of cherished books signed.

The selection of authors, made by the organizing team, ensures a wide diversity of genres and styles—from children's BD to adult BD, from manga to Franco-Belgian comics, from humor to adventure stories—to cater to all sensibilities and ages. Renowned authors mingle with emerging young talents, in a mix that fosters exchange and discovery.

Workshops, Exhibitions, and Young Talent Awards

Beyond the signings, Abracadabulles offers a rich program of activities and workshops: drawing workshops led by illustrators, original exhibitions related to the year's theme, live recorded author interviews, screenings of animated films and documentaries about the world of BD. The festival also organizes a Young Talent Award ceremony, which rewards the best works submitted by young amateur authors in a preliminary competition—a valuable springboard for aspiring creators.

The convivial aspect is also well taken care of: food trucks, light catering, and a relaxation and games area contribute to making the festival a pleasant place to spend the entire day without getting bored, whether you are a dedicated collector come to get your library signed or a child drawing their first characters.
