The Festival of Traditions and Old Crafts in Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy

Every August 15th, the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy transforms into a living museum of bygone skills. The Festival of Traditions and Old Crafts brings together artisans, collectors, and heritage enthusiasts to revive, before the public's eyes, the trades and practices that have shaped rural life in the Tarnais Montagne Noire for centuries. Organized outdoors in the alleys and squares of the village, this free family-friendly festival has become an important cultural landmark of Tarn Noir.

Ancient Trades, Living Memory

The heart of the event is the demonstration of ancient trades. Passionate artisans and dedicated volunteers set up in the village to bring back to life practices that have disappeared from daily life but remain in collective memory:

  • The blacksmith: anvil, bellows, and incandescent metal, the farrier or blacksmith recreates the atmosphere of the old forge, shaping tools and ironwork before the fascinated eyes of the public.
  • The cooper: hooping and assembly of wooden staves, an age-old technique inseparable from viticulture and food preservation.
  • The basket maker: weaving willow and chestnut to make baskets, hampers, and panniers, essential items of peasant life.
  • The wool carder and spinner: from sheep's fleece to wool yarn, including carding and spinning on a spinning wheel, the entire textile process is recreated.
  • The clog maker: carving boxwood or ash wood to shape clogs, the quintessential popular footwear of French peasantry.
  • The wheelwright and cartwright: making and repairing cartwheels and wooden axles banded with iron.
  • The lumberjack and the pit sawyer: traditional techniques for felling and sawing wood, fundamental in this forested region.

Traditional Arts and Crafts

Alongside the vanished trades, the festival also celebrates the arts and crafts that endure or are being revived:

  • Rural pottery and ceramics: hand-shaping or wheel-throwing, firing in primitive or traditional kilns
  • Lace and embroidery: the feminine textile arts of yesteryear, represented by craftswomen who perpetuate gestures passed down from generation to generation
  • Natural dyeing: using local dye plants to color wool and fabrics according to ancient methods
  • Candle and beeswax candle making, evoking the lighting of rural homes
  • Rope and string making from twisted plant fibers

The Natural and Heritage Context of Tarn Noir

Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy is a commune in the Montagne Noire, a forested massif marking the southern edge of the Massif Central between the Tarn and Hérault departments. Located at an altitude of about 600 meters, in the heart of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, the commune is surrounded by oak, chestnut, and conifer forests, providing a pleasantly cool and shaded atmosphere in the summer.

This preserved natural setting gives the festival an additional meaning: the celebrated trades were intimately linked to this forested, mountainous territory. Lumberjacking, making clogs from boxwood, gathering dye plants, or mountain pastoralism are all practices rooted in the natural resources of the Haut-Languedoc.

Family Activities and Shared Meal

The festival is designed to be a moment of intergenerational sharing. Children are particularly encouraged to approach the artisans, touch the materials, observe the gestures, and even try some techniques under the supervision of the demonstrators. This 'learning by doing' approach is one of the event's stated objectives.

A shared meal or village meal may be organized in the tradition of French rural festivals, allowing residents and visitors to extend the day around a friendly table. Musical entertainment with ancient instruments or Occitan traditional music groups sometimes complements the program.

Free Admission, Popular Spirit

In the tradition of popular rural festivals, access to the Festival of Traditions and Old Crafts of Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy is entirely free. The aim is for every family, every resident of the surrounding communes, every tourist passing through the Haut-Languedoc to enjoy this day of living memory without financial constraints.
