Medieval festival at the Château des Ducs de Lorraine in Moselle
The Sierck-les-Bains Castle Festival is a medieval event organized every summer at the Château des Ducs de Lorraine. Knight fights, equestrian jousts, falconry, craft market, and children's activities immerse the public in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. On Saturday evening, a pyrotechnic show illuminates the castle ruins. The festival attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The Sierck-les-Bains Castle Festival is one of the most emblematic medieval events in northern Lorraine. Organized every year in August within the walls of the majestic Château des Ducs de Lorraine, this festival transports the public to the medieval era for a festive and family-friendly weekend. Driven by the Association du Château des Ducs de Lorraine, the event celebrates the rich historical heritage of this listed site overlooking the Moselle valley.
The Castle Festival program is full of spectacular activities. Visitors can witness knight fights in armor, thrilling equestrian jousts, and falconry demonstrations featuring raptors and birds of prey. Historical reenactment troupes animate the site throughout the weekend, offering short plays, medieval music, and period dances.
A medieval market is set up within the castle grounds, bringing together artisans and merchants offering period items, jewelry, decorative armor, handcrafted leather goods, and local products. Visitors can discover ancient skills through demonstrations of blacksmithing, pottery, and other traditional crafts.
The younger ones are not forgotten with workshops for children: archery, introduction to foam sword fighting, medieval face painting, and period skill games. A mini-farm also allows toddlers to discover farm animals. Children attending in medieval costume benefit from a reduced rate.
The highlight of the Castle Festival is undoubtedly the Saturday evening pyrotechnic show. Fireworks and light shows set the castle ruins ablaze, offering a magical spectacle against a starry sky. This magical moment, visible from the entire valley, is the climax of the weekend.
The Château des Ducs de Lorraine, built in the 11th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Moselle, offers an exceptional panorama of the valley and surrounding hills. Classified as a historic monument, it is one of the most important medieval remains in the border region with Luxembourg and Germany. The medieval festival allows for a rediscovery of this heritage in a lively and festive atmosphere.
Food stalls offer medieval and regional specialties: flammekueche, spit-roasted hams, grilled meats, potato pancakes, crepes, and pastries. A bar offers beer, local wine, and hypocrass. The friendly and good-natured atmosphere makes this festival a cherished moment of sharing for everyone.
