International academy and classical music festival in Alsace
Since 1996, the Festival Musicalta has transformed Rouffach and its surroundings into a major hub for classical and chamber music. For three weeks between July and August, this international music academy hosts hundreds of students from around the world and offers over fifty concerts, recitals, and musical marathons in the churches and heritage sites of the Rouffach region. A festival where intimacy and artistic excellence resonate through the Alsatian vineyards.
Born in 1996 from the audacious dream of a handful of passionate musicians, Musicalta took on the challenge of bringing classical music to rural areas at a level of excellence comparable to that of major cities. The arrival of the academy in the Pays de Rouffach in 2001 gave new life to this unique project, rooted in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards between Colmar and Mulhouse.
Musicalta combines two complementary dimensions. The International Academy hosts approximately 400 students from around the world each summer for two intensive ten-day sessions. Over twenty disciplines are taught — violin, piano, cello, flute, clarinet, voice, chamber music — by professors from international conservatories and orchestras. The Off Festival "Open Stages", on the other hand, offers over fifty free concerts, musical marathons, and recitals in the region's churches and halls.
The concerts take place in exceptional settings that contribute to the magic of Musicalta. The Notre-Dame de Rouffach church, a masterpiece of Romanesque and Gothic art, offers remarkable acoustics for major concerts. The Château d'Isenbourg, perched on the heights of the town amidst the vineyards, hosts intimate recitals in a sumptuous setting. The EPLEFPA campus and the Collège Saint-Joseph complete this network of venues where music resonates in every stone.
Since 2013, Musicalta has created the "Grandes Scènes", producing concerts in major French venues and extending the festival's renown far beyond the borders of Alsace. In 2022, a "Printemps Musical" (Musical Spring) was launched in Chatou, near Paris, further expanding the reach of this musical adventure born in Rouffach.
The Pays de Rouffach, Vignobles et Châteaux, offers an exceptional natural setting for Musicalta. Between concerts, festival-goers can explore the Alsace Wine Route, discover local grand crus — Vorbourg, Pfingstberg — and stroll through the medieval streets of Rouffach, dominated by the majestic silhouette of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. An experience where music and the Alsatian art of living combine harmoniously.
