Zany and bizarre contemporary music in Essonne
Born in 2017 at the MJC of Palaiseau, the Palmipède festival is organized by the Club de Smurf association. Each spring, it brings together for two evenings a selection of experimental and offbeat contemporary music, with no preference for style but with unusual and wild sounds as its only compass. Since 2025, it has been held at the Paul B concert hall in Massy.
Founded in 2017 by the Club de Smurf association, the Palmipède festival was born from a simple conviction: the most interesting music is often that which sounds nothing like what we usually hear. Launched in the halls of the MJC – Théâtre des 3 Vallées de Palaiseau, this contemporary music festival with a zany and bizarre tendency (in the words of its organizers) has established itself in less than ten years as an unmissable event for lovers of experimental, offbeat, and audacious sounds in the Île-de-France region.
Palmipède's artistic direction is as clear as it is ambitious: no stylistic boundaries, no imposed genre, but experimental and wild sounds as its sole compass. Noise rock, abrasive electronic, deviant folk, experimental rap, free jazz, post-punk, shoegaze, math rock: anything can find its place in Palmipède's programming, as long as it brings something unexpected, original, surprising. Programmer Julien Levy crafts each edition like a journey into unexplored sonic territories, with "one foot in the local scene and one foot towards artists from further afield."
For its first seven editions, the festival was held at the MJC – Théâtre des 3 Vallées de Palaiseau. This community and cultural venue in the heart of the town was the natural breeding ground for the Palmipède adventure, offering a warm and accessible setting for evenings that attracted between 250 and 350 spectators. The 6th edition in April 2024 notably featured Théa, Annie. Adaa, Vertiges, Carmen Sea, Milla Leika, Fishtalk, Meule, Flupke, and Shaker Poisson for two memorable evenings. The 5th edition in 2023 brought together equally atypical artists in the same venue.
The 7th edition in April 2025 marked a significant turning point in the festival's history: for the first time, Palmipède moved to the Centre Culturel Paul Bailliart (Paul B) in Massy, a reference contemporary music venue in Essonne. This move to a larger, better-equipped facility reflects the festival's growth and its ambition to reach a wider audience without betraying its identity. The 8th edition is scheduled for April 17 and 18, 2026 at Paul B.
What sets Palmipède apart from other festivals is also its unique atmosphere. The festival aims to create "an atmosphere all its own" where the audience can "let loose together." No clinical concerts where everyone stays in their corner: Palmipède seeks to generate collective energy, a complicity between artists and the audience that makes good concerts magical. The deliberately accessible prices (€5 to €15 per evening) and the community spirit of Club de Smurf contribute to this festive and uninhibited atmosphere.
Behind Palmipède is the Club de Smurf association, created in 2014 in Massy. This cultural association from Essonne aims to promote all forms of artistic expression in live performance. It also organizes other musical events throughout the year, including the Paul Brings the Noise evenings, demonstrating intense cultural activity and strong commitment to the local music scene.
The 8th edition of the Palmipède festival takes place on April 17 and 18, 2026, at Paul B in Massy. Two evenings of experimental, unusual, and offbeat contemporary music, organized by the Club de Smurf association, featuring a program combining artists from Essonne and guests from further afield.
For its eighth edition, the Palmipède festival continues its adventure at Paul B in Massy on April 17 and 18, 2026. The Club de Smurf association maintains its demanding program of experimental and offbeat contemporary music, combining the local Essonne scene with artists from other regions for two evenings that promise to challenge the ears and habits of the audience. Accessible prices and a friendly atmosphere are guaranteed.
