Courneuve Square: La Fête de la Musique on a grand scale in La Courneuve
Every year on June 21st, La Courneuve transforms its public spaces into a huge musical stage with its festival Courneuve Square. This event, which goes far beyond a simple celebration of the national Fête de la Musique, unfolds over two days and two emblematic sites in the city: the RER B station and Place Claire-Lacombe on Friday evening, followed by the large Parc de la Liberté on Saturday. The program covers a wide musical spectrum, with a particular focus on rap, hip-hop, world music, and performances by artists from the area.
A Program Rooted in the Territory
Courneuve Square stands out for its strong commitment to artists and residents of La Courneuve and Seine-Saint-Denis. The program gives a central place to local music education structures: the batucada from the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional 93 (CRR93), led by middle school students under their teachers' direction, illustrates the musical vitality of the area. The Camion Scratch, a mobile unit equipped for DJing, graffiti, rap, and beatboxing workshops, travels around the city and the festival to introduce young people to hip-hop culture in all its dimensions.
Professional artists complement the program, bringing stage expertise to this popular celebration. International singers like the Slovak musician Marcela Cisarova, invited to offer a vocal and cultural journey to children in leisure centers, illustrate the international scope of Courneuve Square's programming.
Parc de la Liberté, an Open-Air Stage
La Courneuve's Parc de la Liberté is one of the green lungs of Seine-Saint-Denis. With its lawns, shaded paths, and relaxation areas, it provides an ideal setting for a large popular festival. On the Saturday of the Fête de la Musique, the park becomes a vast open-air stage featuring concerts, performances, and street entertainment. The cultural and culinary richness of the area is highlighted, with food stalls offering world cuisines that reflect the extraordinary diversity of La Courneuve's population.
A Festival Rooted in the Community
Courneuve Square is much more than a simple musical event: it is a political and social act, an affirmation of the cultural vitality of a city often reduced to its social difficulties. The city of La Courneuve, through its cultural services and in partnership with associations like Pop Plaine Commune, invests annually in the quality of the programming to offer its residents a celebration worthy of the greatest cities. Admission is completely free, and activities are accessible to everyone, from the youngest to the seniors.
