The forest town of Val-d'Oise celebrates music on the edge of the woods
Every June 21st, Saint-Leu-la-Forêt celebrates the Fête de la Musique in the exceptional natural setting that has made this town in Val-d'Oise famous. Bordered by the majestic Montmorency state forest, the town benefits from a green and peaceful environment that is ideal for open-air concerts. Its tree-lined parks, quiet squares, and residential streets are transformed into improvised musical stages on June 21st.
The Montmorency forest, which surrounds Saint-Leu-la-Forêt on several sides, is at the heart of the town's identity. This 3,500-hectare state forest, composed mainly of chestnut and oak trees, provides an incomparable natural backdrop for the June 21st festivities. In some years, acoustic concerts or sound installations are organized on the edge of the forest, taking advantage of the silence of the tall trees and the natural acoustics of this exceptional setting.
Saint-Leu-la-Forêt is primarily a residential town, appreciated for its quality of life, greenery, and tranquility. Its inter-municipal music school welcomes many students who contribute to local musical life. During the Fête de la Musique, these young and older musicians perform in public, often for the first time, in a moment of shared emotion that strengthens the social bond in the town.
The Fête de la Musique in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt offers a program adapted to its population:
Saint-Leu-la-Forêt has a rich history dating back to the Merovingian era. The Saint-Leu church, dedicated to the saint bishop who evangelized the region in the 5th century, and the remains of the royal castle bear witness to the historical importance of the town. This heritage identity gives the local Fête de la Musique a special cultural dimension, rooted in the town's long history.
In accordance with the spirit of the national Fête de la Musique, all concerts in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt are free and accessible without reservation. The event is above all a moment of community gathering, an annual event where the inhabitants of the forest come together to share their passion for music in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Saint-Leu-la-Forêt will once again host its Fête de la Musique on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in its enchanting forest setting. Free open-air concerts, performances by the music school, and musical activities for the whole family will liven up the evening. The program will be unveiled in spring 2026.
