A festival born in 1983 within a 13th-century church
The Automne Musical de Taverny was founded in 1983. At the time, the town had been without a musical season since the end of the Nuits Musicales, which had been led by tenor Michel Sénéchal—whose family has called Taverny home for eight generations—and the Notre-Dame church had not hosted concerts for nearly a decade. Claude Robin and a small group of music lovers established a non-profit association to revive the tradition. The inaugural concert was performed on September 9, 1983, by guitarist Alexandre Lagoya.
Pianist Jacqueline Robin, who had lived in Taverny since 1972 and taught at the CNSM in Paris, secured the support of the then-mayor, Raymond Demanet. Throughout her tenure at the CNSM until 1989, the festival invited young award-winners to perform their very first concerts; artists such as Alexandre Tharaud, François Chaplin, Momo Kodama, Thierry Félix, François-Xavier Roth, and Eric Ferrand-N'Kaoua all played here early in their careers. Jacqueline Robin passed away in 2007; in early 2015, the town named its conservatory in her honor, which became the Conservatoire à rayonnement départemental Jacqueline-Robin in 2024.
Notre-Dame Church, the main concert venue
Most concerts take place at the Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption on rue Jean XXIII, a 13th-century Gothic building that has hosted over two hundred concerts since 1983. The Théâtre Madeleine-Renaud, located at 6 rue du Chemin Vert de Boissy, and the Salle des Fêtes, at 2 place Charles de Gaulle, host other performances depending on the year.
A volunteer-run association
The festival is organized by the association Les Heures Musicales de Taverny, which is composed entirely of volunteers and supported by the City of Taverny, with additional funding from the Val-d'Oise General Council since the late 1980s. Claude Robin served as president from 1983 to 2013, succeeded by concert pianist Armine Varvarian. The festival is held annually in September and October; the 2026 edition, the 44th, features six concerts spread over four weeks.
Taverny is located in the Oise plain, about twenty kilometers northwest of Paris, and is roughly a thirty-minute train ride from the Gare du Nord.
