Exceptional openings and visits of the heritage of Val-d'Oise
The European Heritage Days in Val-d'Oise are one of the most popular cultural events in the department. Every third weekend of September, in accordance with the national calendar coordinated by the Ministry of Culture, hundreds of sites open their doors for free or offer special activities for the general public.
Val-d'Oise has an exceptionally rich heritage, often unknown to the general public. Founded on a territory that was at the heart of medieval and royal Île-de-France, the department's treasures include:
Each year, the Heritage Days are organized around a national theme — "Living Heritage", "Heritage of Itineraries, Routes and Networks", "Maritime Heritage", etc. — which each territory adapts to its own specificities. In Val-d'Oise, this annual theme is an opportunity to highlight little-known aspects of local heritage and invite new discoveries.
Beyond simple openings, the Journées du Patrimoine du Val-d'Oise offer numerous activities: guided tours commented by historians and specialists, workshops for children to discover heritage trades, historical reenactments, concerts in heritage settings, and temporary exhibitions.
In the spirit of the European Heritage Days, all activities offered by participating sites are free or at reduced prices. This free access is a unique opportunity for the inhabitants of Val-d'Oise to discover places that are usually ticketed or closed, and for external visitors to explore a department often overlooked in favor of Paris and its immediate surroundings.
The 43rd European Heritage Days will take place on September 19 and 20, 2026 in Val-d'Oise (Friday, September 18, being reserved for schoolchildren with the operation "Levez les yeux!" - "Look up!"). Castles, abbeys, museums, historical monuments, and unusual sites in the department will open their doors for a weekend of free heritage discoveries. The two national themes for 2026 are "Heritage of Photography" (echoing the bicentenary of photography) and "Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine".
The European Heritage Days 2026 will once again allow free exploration of Val-d'Oise's rich heritage. Castles, abbeys, museums, historical monuments, and unusual sites will open their doors on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, in accordance with the national calendar coordinated by the Ministry of Culture (3rd weekend of September).
This 43rd edition is held under two national themes: "Heritage of Photography", which celebrates the bicentenary of photography (postcards, family photographs, illustrated press, exhibitions…), and "Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine", dedicated to the preservation and transmission of heritage for future generations. Each Val-d'Oise site interprets these themes according to its specificities.
Many emblematic sites in Val-d'Oise traditionally participate in the event, including Royaumont Abbey in Asnières-sur-Oise, Maubuisson Abbey in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, the Château d'Écouen (National Museum of the Renaissance), Doctor Gachet's House, and the sites of Auvers-sur-Oise. Guided tours, exceptional openings, workshops, and activities are on the program throughout the weekend.
The detailed program and the complete list of participating sites will be published in autumn 2026 on the Val-d'Oise Department website (valdoise.fr) and on the national portal journeesdupatrimoine.culture.gouv.fr.
