Dourdan's big summer festival: entertainment, concerts, fireworks, and conviviality
Every summer, the town of Dourdan organizes its big municipal festival. Around July 14th and during the summer festivities, residents and visitors gather for concerts, street entertainment, a torchlight procession, and spectacular fireworks. This town festival perpetuates the tradition of popular celebrations in the old medieval city of Essonne.
Dourdan, a medieval city in southern Essonne, celebrates its grand municipal festival every summer. Labeled "Petite Ville de Demain" (Small Town of Tomorrow) and benefiting from its remarkable historical charm — its 13th-century castle, its medieval market hall, its picturesque alleys —, the commune of nearly 10,000 inhabitants knows how to make its summer festivities true moments of gathering and collective joy.
The French National Day on July 14th is the highlight of the summer celebrations in Dourdan. The evening traditionally begins at 6 PM with entertainment organized by the Amicale des Sapeurs-Pompiers de Dourdan (Dourdan Firefighters' Association), offering games, refreshments, and conviviality in the town square. The evening continues with the torchlight procession, a spectacular nocturnal procession with torches that crosses the illuminated medieval alleys of the old town.
At 11 PM, fireworks launched from the castle ramparts light up Dourdan's sky with colorful bursts, offering the gathered crowd a striking spectacle in this unique medieval setting. The popular ball, starting at 11:30 PM, extends the celebration until the end of the night.
Beyond July 14th, the Fête de la Musique on June 21st and the various summer events organized by the town hall and associations of Dourdan contribute to the city's animation throughout the beautiful season. Open-air concerts, street performances, exhibitions, and cultural events punctuate the summer calendar.
Dourdan's festive calendar is one of the richest in Essonne for a town of its size. The Medieval Festival (first weekend of June), the Fête de la Musique (June 21st), the National Celebration (July 13-14), and various other cultural events testify to the festive vitality of a commune that jealously guards its traditions.
Dourdan's privileged geographical location — 35 km from Paris, accessible by RER C, in the heart of a landscape of hedgerows and forests —, its listed medieval castle, and its preserved historic center make it a popular tourist destination whose festivals attract many visitors from the Paris region each year.
All municipal festivities are free and open to all.
