Family medieval festival at the medieval castle of Montfort-sur-Risle in the Risle valley
The Médiévales de Montfort-sur-Risle take place at the foot of the medieval castle of Montfort, perched on a spur overlooking the Risle valley in the Eure region. This castle site, whose origins date back to the 11th century, was the fief of the powerful Montfort family who marked the history of Normandy and England. Since 2005, the association Montfort Culture et Patrimoine (AMCP) has organized this great medieval festival every year in September, generally as part of the European Heritage Days, bringing back the chivalrous spirit and atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
The highlight of the Médiévales de Montfort is the show of the Galops de l'Histoire, a troupe of armored riders who offer impressive equestrian tournaments. Noble knights competing for the honor of a lady, jousting at full gallop, equestrian skill games, and parades in ceremonial costumes punctuate the days. These equestrian shows, performed by riders passionate about historical reenactment, are the main attraction of the event and amaze both young and old.
Beyond the tournaments, the Médiévales offer a rich program of medieval shows. Reenactment groups present ground knight fights, melees, and sword duels. Fire-breathers and flame jugglers offer striking pyrotechnic displays. Medieval music accompanies the festivities with drums, flutes, and vielles, while storytellers and entertainers liven up the castle grounds.
The Médiévales de Montfort place a central focus on families and children. The youngest can try their hand at archery, medieval fencing, and participate in a 'children's crusade'. Craft workshops allow visitors to discover medieval know-how: carpentry related to shipbuilding, blacksmithing and ironwork, textiles (spinning, weaving), and medieval cooking. These participatory demonstrations make the Médiévales a fun and educational event appreciated by all generations.
A medieval market brings together artisans and merchants offering medieval-inspired products: jewelry, leather goods, carved wood, pottery, and decorative objects. For catering, a crêperie, a caterer, and stalls offering local Norman dishes allow visitors to eat on site in a warm atmosphere. Parking is free and accessible near the castle site.
The 21st edition of the Montfort-sur-Risle Medieval Festival will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, at the foot of the medieval castle of Montfort. The Montfort Culture et Patrimoine (AMCP) association brings together several re-enactment troupes linked to the Duchy of Normandy, a large medieval camp, equestrian shows, a medieval market, children's entertainment, and a historical episode dedicated to the capture of Montfort castle.
For this 21st edition, the Montfort-sur-Risle Medieval Festival will take place over one day, on Sunday, September 6, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, at the foot of the medieval castle of Montfort, in the Risle valley. The Montfort Culture et Patrimoine (AMCP) association sets up a vast re-enactment camp where soldiers and knights in armor deploy for melee combat close to the public, in complete safety.
Several re-enactment companies affiliated with the world of the Duchy of Normandy are announced: le Ran Normaund, les Lances Normandes, les Ours de Muspelheim, les Gaux de France, and Historiae Vivae. Les Marchands des Mers Froides present stalls showcasing medieval craftsmanship and way of life. A historical episode stages the capture of Montfort castle, with archery demonstrations, skirmishes, and a final battle.
The day is punctuated by equestrian shows, the musicians and dancers of the Pastourel company, fire-eaters, and a large medieval market bringing together artisans and traders. Children can enjoy a medieval puppet show, a storyteller, and introductory workshops in archery and fencing.
