The largest autumn fair in France, heir to a thousand-year-old tradition
The Foire Saint-Romain de Rouen is more than just a funfair: it is a living monument of Rouen's history, an event rooted in the collective memory of the city for nearly a thousand years. Every autumn, the Esplanade Saint-Gervais transforms into a huge open-air amusement park, featuring thrilling rides, family attractions, candy stalls, and traditional games.
The history of the Foire Saint-Romain is rooted in Rouen's most famous legend: that of the Gargouille. In the 7th century, Saint Romain, Archbishop of Rouen, is said to have defeated a terrible dragon that terrorized the city and devoured its inhabitants. This monstrous creature, the Gargouille, spewed torrents of water and fire, flooding and burning the city. Saint Romain, armed with his faith alone and accompanied by a condemned man, is said to have vanquished the monster and led it in procession through the city.
When the relics of Saint Romain were transferred in the 11th century (around 1080) from the church of Saint-Romain (which became Saint-Godard) to the Notre-Dame de Rouen Cathedral, the event attracted over 10,000 people: peasants, acrobats, storytellers, and performers. The following year, the same gathering occurred again: the Foire du Pardon (Fair of Pardon) was born. It only took the name Foire Saint-Romain at the end of the 19th century.
Today, the Foire Saint-Romain spans nearly a month, from October to November, and brings together over 200 attractions on the Esplanade Saint-Gervais, a vast esplanade located on the banks of the Seine on the right bank. From roller coasters to bumper cars, from children's rides to extreme thrill attractions, from shooting galleries to duck fishing, every generation finds something to enjoy.
The Foire Saint-Romain would not be complete without its croustillons, those round, golden fritters, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, generously sprinkled with powdered sugar. True emblems of the fair, croustillons are to Rouen what cotton candy is to traditional funfairs. They can be found at dozens of stalls, alongside candy apples, waffles, churros, and all the funfair treats.
The Foire Saint-Romain is a deeply popular event, bringing together the people of Rouen of all generations in a joyful and good-natured atmosphere. The official inauguration, with its traditional fireworks, kicks off a month of festivities. Discounted days and extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays ensure access for the greatest number.
The Foire Saint-Romain 2026 will be held from October 16 to November 15, 2026, on the Saint-Gervais esplanade, on the right bank of Rouen. For one month, France's second-largest funfair will feature over 200 attractions, from thrilling rides to family attractions, not forgetting the essential croustillons stands.
The Foire Saint-Romain returns in autumn 2026 to the Saint-Gervais esplanade, from October 16 to November 15. The second-largest funfair in France after the Foire du Trône, it attracts over 1.5 million visitors each year and brings together more than 200 attractions on the banks of the Seine.
On the program: about forty thrilling rides (roller coasters, big tower, ghost train), family attractions, children's rides, game stands, and the unmissable Palais des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors). For treats, the famous croustillons sprinkled with icing sugar are alongside cotton candy, candy apples, waffles, and other funfair specialties.
Admission to the fair is free, with each attraction priced individually (from 3 to 5 € for family rides, from 5 to 8 € for thrilling attractions). The detailed program (inauguration, fireworks, reduced-price days) is announced by the organizer closer to the event.
