Christmas market and winter events in Rouen
Since 2009, Rouen Givrée has transformed the Norman capital into a magical end-of-year setting each year. For over a month, from late November to late December, the city lights up and offers a rich program of winter events: a Christmas market on the cathedral square with fifty stalls from producers and artisans, a spectacular Grand Parade through the streets of the historic center, the Givré Refuge dedicated to families in Place Saint-Sever, concerts, street shows, creative workshops for children, a musical bike parade, and the Norman ugly sweater championship. Rouen Givrée brings together hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and is the unmissable winter event in the Rouen metropolitan area.
Created in 2009 by the City of Rouen, Rouen Givrée has become in a few years one of the most popular winter events in Normandy. Each year, from late November to late December, the city is adorned with lights and events to celebrate the end-of-year holidays in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The Christmas market, set up on the square in front of the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral of Rouen, is the centerpiece of Rouen Givrée. About fifty beautifully decorated stalls host local producers, artisans, and Norman creators who offer regional gastronomic specialties, handcrafted items, Christmas decorations, and original gift ideas. The market is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours on weekends.
A highlight of Rouen Givrée, the Grand Parade brings together thousands of spectators each year in the streets of the city center. This magical procession combines illuminated floats, brass bands, dancers, acrobats, and fantastical characters in a magical atmosphere. The parade traditionally takes place on the first Saturday of December in the late afternoon.
Located in Place Saint-Sever, the Givré Refuge is a space entirely dedicated to families and children. Here, visitors can discover Christmas automatons, an enchanted forest, creative workshops, storytelling shows, and fun activities for children aged one to ten. Access to the Givré Refuge is free and is an essential stop for families.
Rouen Givrée spreads throughout all the city's neighborhoods with open-air concerts, musical afterworks with DJ sets and gospel, the now-famous Norman ugly sweater championship, the decorated bike bike parade, the ice gala, and numerous street performances. Each neighborhood hosts its own events, making Rouen Givrée a truly unifying event for the entire metropolitan area.
Rouen Givrée attracts visitors from all over Normandy and beyond each year, contributing significantly to the city's tourist and commercial appeal during the winter season. The event benefits from the exceptional setting of Rouen's historic center, with its medieval streets, half-timbered houses, and the Gothic cathedral immortalized by Monet, which lend themselves beautifully to Christmas illuminations and decorations.
Rouen Givrée takes place each year from late November to late December. The Christmas market generally closes on December 28th.
