Artisanal Christmas Market and Festivities in the Medieval City
The Bernay Christmas Market, part of the "Bernay Scintille" festivities, is an unmissable winter event in the Eure region. Set in the majestic Abbatiale, this artisanal market brings together around forty craftspeople offering jewelry, toys, decorations, and original creations. Magical illuminations, video projections on building facades, a carousel, Santa Claus visits, and convivial snacks complete a family-friendly and free program in the heart of this Norman city.
Each year in December, the town of Bernay, a medieval gem in the Eure region, lights up to host Christmas festivities under the banner "Bernay Scintille". At the heart of this event, the Artisanal Christmas Market is held in the exceptional setting of the Abbatiale de Bernay, a 11th-century Romanesque building that gives the event a unique atmosphere blending heritage and enchantment.
The Christmas Market brings together about 40 carefully selected artisans, offering a diverse range of gift ideas: handmade jewelry, wooden toys, artisanal Christmas decorations, ceramics, textiles, scented candles, and many other original creations. Food lovers are not left out with stands offering confectionery, local Norman products, and seasonal treats. The market is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 7 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm, with free admission.
The launch of Bernay Scintille is marked by the traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony and festivities on Place Gustave-Héon. Spectacular video projections, such as "The Extraordinary Journey of Santa Claus," adorn the historic facades of the town with animated and colorful images, creating an enchanting visual spectacle for all ages. The streets of the town center, lined with half-timbered houses, sparkle under garlands and light decorations.
The Bernay Scintille program is full of family activities. A carousel with its enchanted horses is set up on the Place de la Hôtel de Ville, while Santa Claus welcomes children for free souvenir photos. A convivial Christmas snack is offered with crepes, hot chocolate, mulled wine, and other treats. On Sunday afternoons, mascots parade through the streets to the delight of children. Creative workshops, ice sculptures, and luminous characters complete this festive program.
Bernay, with its abbey founded by Judith of Brittany in the 11th century, its half-timbered houses, its cobbled streets, and its remarkable heritage, offers an ideal setting for Christmas festivities. The market and activities highlight this exceptional architectural heritage, inviting visitors to discover or rediscover this charming Norman city. The event is supported by the City of Bernay and local associations, in a spirit of conviviality and sharing accessible to all.
