Young audience festival of Le Volcan, Scène nationale du Havre
Created in 2018 by Le Volcan, Scène nationale du Havre, Festival Ad Hoc is the major annual event for performing arts for young audiences in the Le Havre Seine Métropole area. Every year in November-December, for eight days, the festival presents an ambitious program of theater, dance, puppetry, music, and visual arts designed for children, from the age of one. More than twenty shows and a hundred performances take place in a dozen towns within the urban community, making Ad Hoc a unique event in its scale and its ability to bring performing arts for young audiences closer to families, in performance venues as well as in schools and local spaces.
Festival Ad Hoc was born in 2018 from a conviction held by Le Volcan, Scène nationale du Havre: performing arts for young audiences deserve a demanding program and a dedicated highlight event, capable of reaching families throughout the territory. In just a few editions, the festival has established itself as a major event for young audience creation in Normandy and beyond.
Ad Hoc's uniqueness lies in its ability to offer shows for all ages, from six months old, with particular attention to artistic quality and accessibility. Theater, dance, puppetry, acrobatics, music, and visual arts are presented in short formats (30 to 60 minutes) adapted to children's rhythms, in a diversity of forms and offerings that reflect the richness of contemporary creation for young audiences.
Ad Hoc is not limited to the walls of Le Volcan. The festival extends to a dozen towns in the Le Havre Seine Métropole urban community: Le Havre, Montivilliers, Turretot, Sandouville, Saint-Jouin-Bruneval, and others. Performances take place in theaters, media libraries, schools, and local venues, allowing families to discover performing arts close to home.
Each edition features between 19 and 23 shows and between 93 and 103 performances, in addition to creative workshops and fun afternoons. A single ticket price of 5 euros per show ensures access for the widest possible audience.
Festival Ad Hoc is distinguished by its commitment to creation. Each edition presents premieres, newly created shows, and co-productions supported by Le Volcan. Leading artists, such as Phia Ménard, appear alongside emerging companies and inventive collectives, in a spirit of discovery and diversity.
Beyond the shows, Ad Hoc offers free creative workshops and fun afternoons to extend the artistic experience with families. The festival is designed as a moment of intergenerational sharing, where parents and children experience strong artistic emotions together.
The 9th edition of Festival Ad Hoc is expected at the end of November - beginning of December 2026 in Le Havre and the towns of Le Havre Seine Métropole. Le Volcan will once again offer a rich program of performing arts for young audiences.
