Contemporary art takes over the city of Le Havre
Since 2017, Un Été au Havre has established itself as one of the unmissable contemporary art events in France. Born from the desire to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the founding of Le Havre in 1517 by King Francis I, this event quickly surpassed its commemorative purpose to become a perennial summer event, eagerly awaited each year by the residents of Le Havre and visitors.
The ambition of Un Été au Havre is to transform the city into a vast artistic creation space, inviting international artists to engage with Le Havre's exceptional architecture—the city rebuilt by Auguste Perret, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005—and its unique maritime landscapes.
Each edition of Un Été au Havre features around ten original works created specifically for the city by internationally renowned artists. Monumental sculptures, immersive installations, interventions on facades, light artworks, performances, and sound creations take over emblematic locations in Le Havre: the Promenade des Régates, the beach, the Hanging Gardens, the train station, the university library, the Perret districts, and the port.
All works are free and open access, true to the event's philosophy: to make contemporary art accessible to the greatest number of people and to make the city itself the museum. An artistic trail connects the works and allows visitors to discover or rediscover the urban geography of Le Havre.
Over the editions, some works have been made permanent and integrated into a permanent outdoor contemporary art collection visible year-round. Among the emblematic works in this collection are UP#3 by Lang/Baumann, Catène de containers by Vincent Ganivet, and Impact by Fabien Mérelle. This constantly evolving collection makes Le Havre an artistic destination in its own right, beyond the summer season.
Un Été au Havre has profoundly transformed the image and attractiveness of Le Havre. The event has helped attract new visitors, boost cultural tourism, and strengthen residents' pride in their city. The GIP Un Été Au Havre, which brings together the City of Le Havre, the Le Havre Seine Métropole urban community, HAROPA Port du Havre, and the CCI Seine Estuaire, drives this ambition of urban transformation through art.
The 10th edition of Un Été au Havre, a free and open-access summer contemporary art event, will take place from late June to mid-September 2026. For this anniversary edition, new monumental works will take over Le Havre's public spaces, resonating with the centenary of Claude Monet's death celebrated in Normandy in 2026.
Un Été au Havre celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026 with an anniversary edition from late June to mid-September. Since 2017, the event has transformed the city into a vast open-air museum each summer, inviting internationally renowned artists to create works that dialogue with the UNESCO-listed Perret architecture and Le Havre's maritime landscapes.
For 2026, the program takes on a special dimension: the city partners with the centenary of Claude Monet's death, celebrated throughout Normandy. The "In Monet's Footsteps" section offers itineraries to the sites where the painter, who grew up in Le Havre, set up his easel — from the Seine estuary to the Norman coast. In parallel, the André Malraux Modern Art Museum (MuMa) presents the exhibition "Monet in Le Havre" (from June 5 to September 27, 2026).
Among the new creations announced for 2026 is « À REVERS, RÊVERA » by the Bureau Idéal collective, which reuses two 1967 kiosks designed by architects from Auguste Perret's workshop. The complete program and the list of invited artists will be gradually unveiled in spring 2026 on the official website uneteauhavre.fr.
All works remain, true to the spirit of the event, freely accessible in public spaces. The permanent collection of works perpetuated over the editions (Catène de containers by Vincent Ganivet, UP#3 by Lang/Baumann, Impact by Fabien Mérelle…) remains visible all year round.
The 10th edition of Un Été au Havre (from June 27 to September 20, 2026), themed « Double Play » and directed by artistic director Gaël Charbau, unveils new contemporary art creations disseminated in public spaces, with free access. The « double play » invites us to look at the city from several angles at once — reflections, viewpoints, and contrasts re-enact our perceptions of the Le Havre landscape.

The entire art trail in public spaces remains completely free. The permanent collection of works perpetuated over the editions (Catène de containers by Vincent Ganivet, UP#3 by Lang/Baumann, Impact by Fabien Mérelle…) remains visible all year round.
