Free medieval festival in the historic setting of the Abbey of Grestain, a major site of Anglo-Norman history
Les Médiévales de Grestain is a free medieval festival organized at the Abbey of Grestain in Fatouville-Grestain, near Honfleur. This major site of Anglo-Norman history hosts historical reenactment groups in period costumes, combat demonstrations, wood-fired cooking, and medieval music every summer. The troupe L'Arbre de Sovenance combines theater and acrobatics. A local artisan market completes this unmissable family event.
The Abbey Notre-Dame de Grestain, founded around 1050 by Herluin de Conteville, stepfather of William the Conqueror, is a site of considerable historical importance. Located in Fatouville-Grestain in the Eure department, a few kilometers from Honfleur, it houses the tomb of Arlette de Falaise, mother of William the Conqueror. It is in this historically rich setting that Les Médiévales de Grestain, a free medieval festival, takes place every summer, offering a true journey back in time to the heart of the Anglo-Norman era.
Several historical reenactment groups take over the abbey grounds to recreate medieval daily life. Dressed in highly authentic period costumes, the reenactors set up their camps with tents, furniture, and utensils in accordance with medieval customs. Visitors can watch sword and shield combat demonstrations, observe the preparation of medieval meals cooked over a wood fire, and discover the weapons, tools, and everyday objects of the time. Interactions with enthusiasts provide a deeper understanding of medieval life.
Les Médiévales de Grestain offers a rich and varied artistic program. Two medieval music groups liven up the days with the sounds of drums, flutes, and vielles, creating an immersive soundscape. The troupe L'Arbre de Sovenance presents shows combining theater, acrobatics, and a medieval atmosphere, captivating audiences with their original and spectacular performances. These shows help transform the abbey grounds into a vibrant medieval village.
The medieval artisan market brings together local exhibitors offering regional products and Norman crafts: honey from local producers, craft beer brewed in the region, medieval-inspired jewelry, ceramics, and artisanal creations. This market showcases the know-how of the Seine estuary region and allows visitors to leave with authentic souvenirs of their medieval day.
One of the unique features of Les Médiévales de Grestain is its complete freeness: admission is free, and parking is also free. This accessibility makes the event a popular family gathering for residents of the Eure department and tourists staying in the Honfleur and Pays d'Auge region. The proximity to the Seine estuary and the green setting of the abbey add to the charm of this friendly medieval day open to all.
Les Médiévales de Grestain is expected in August 2026 at the Abbey of Fatouville-Grestain. The event is expected to feature historical reenactments, combat, medieval music, shows, and an artisan market at this major site of Anglo-Norman history. Free admission.
