Music takes over Montauban

Each year on June 21st, during the summer solstice, Montauban transforms into a giant open-air music stage. The Fête de la Musique, conceived in France in 1982 by Jack Lang and Maurice Fleuret and now an unmissable national event, takes on a particularly festive and convivial character in the prefecture of Tarn-et-Garonne.

Dozens of free concerts are offered simultaneously in the streets, squares, gardens, and inner courtyards of the historic center. From morning until the early hours of the night, professional and amateur musicians, local bands, and invited artists perform on improvised or official stages, creating a unique atmosphere where the entire city vibrates in unison.

All musical genres honored

The Fête de la Musique in Montauban is a celebration of musical diversity. No genre is excluded:

• Rock and pop: local and regional bands take over outdoor stages, offering electric performances under the June sun.
• Jazz and improvised music: acoustic ensembles occupy café terraces and shaded squares.
• Classical and chamber music: ensembles offer concerts in gardens or under the arcades of Place Nationale.
• Folk, French and Occitan chanson: local and regional artists recall the rich musical heritage of the Southwest.
• Reggae, world music, and global sounds: reflecting the city's cultural diversity, these styles find their place in the program.
• Electro and contemporary music: in the evening and at night, electronic sounds take over squares and gardens.

The historic city center, an exceptional setting

The setting for the Fête de la Musique in Montauban is one of its greatest assets. The Place Nationale, the baroque heart of the old town with its pink brick arcades, the Place Lefranc, the banks of the Tarn river, the Jardin des Plantes, the medieval streets of the historic center: all natural backdrops that transform each concert into a unique visual and auditory experience.

Montauban, nicknamed 'La Ville Rose' (The Pink City) for the characteristic rosy-ochre color of its bricks, offers music a remarkable architectural setting. The 17th-century facades, Romanesque bell towers, and paved alleys resonate differently depending on the musical genre, creating unique atmospheres on every street corner.

A day for all audiences

The Fête de la Musique in Montauban is designed to welcome all audiences. During the day, musical activities for children and families are offered in the city's parks and gardens. In the afternoon, the program intensifies with concerts for a wider audience. In the evening and at night, the atmosphere becomes more festive and dance-oriented, with bands that make you want to move until midnight.

Organized by the City of Montauban in partnership with local cultural associations, city bars and cafés, and musical structures in the department, the Fête de la Musique coordinates dozens of simultaneous concert venues each year to offer a coherent and festive experience throughout the city center.

In accordance with the original spirit of the national Fête de la Musique, all concerts are completely free and accessible without tickets or reservations. Simply stroll through the streets of Montauban to stumble upon a concert and stay as long as you wish. This freedom of movement and discovery is at the heart of the festival experience.
