The oldest wine festival in Alsace in one of the most beautiful villages in France
Created in 1960, the Eguisheim Winegrowers' Festival is the oldest wine festival in Alsace. Every year, on the last weekend of August, this circular village, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, closes its doors to transform into a huge open-air wine cellar. Folklore, music, Alsatian gastronomy, wine tastings of great vintages, and craft activities mark two days of festivities in the heart of the medieval ramparts.
Since 1960, Eguisheim has celebrated its winegrowers and terroirs every year during a festival that has become emblematic of the Alsatian vineyard. The Eguisheim Winegrowers' Festival is the oldest wine festival in Alsace, and its 64th edition in 2026 testifies to the vitality of this uninterrupted tradition. Eguisheim, the cradle of the Alsatian vineyard and the birthplace of Pope Leo IX, offers an exceptional setting with its unique circular layout, colorful half-timbered houses, and perfectly preserved medieval ramparts.
The festival's concept is unique: on Saturday afternoon, the village gates close, and Eguisheim transforms into a huge open-air tasting cellar. Winegrowers open their courtyards and cellars to visitors, offering tastings of their finest vintages: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and the prestigious Grands Crus Eichberg and Pfersigberg. It's a rare opportunity to meet the winegrowers in their living environment and discover the secrets of their terroirs.
The festival is not limited to wine tasting. Throughout the weekend, the village comes alive with Alsatian folk shows, concerts by orchestras in the squares and courtyards, demonstrations of traditional crafts, and popular dances. On Saturday evening, the lantern-lit ball in the illuminated alleys is one of the most magical moments of the festival. On Sunday, visitors can stroll among the stalls of artisans and artists exhibiting along the ramparts.
Alsatian gastronomy is in the spotlight with numerous food stalls offering regional specialties: tarte flambΓ©e, choucroute, baeckeoffe, pretzels, kougelhopf, and other local delicacies. More than 60 artisans and artists exhibit along the medieval ramparts, offering original creations inspired by Alsace and its traditions.
Eguisheim is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France and was voted "France's Favorite Village" in 2013. Its unique concentric layout, inherited from the medieval fortress of the Counts of Eguisheim, creates a labyrinth of picturesque alleys lined with flowery half-timbered houses and Renaissance fountains. This exceptional heritage, enhanced by the lights and decorations of the festival, provides an incomparable setting for this celebration of vine and wine.
The 64th edition of the Eguisheim Winegrowers' Festival will be held on August 29 and 30, 2026. The village will close its doors on Saturday at 3 PM to welcome visitors to the courtyards and cellars of the winegrowers, with grand cru tastings, folklore, music, and crafts.
