The great festival of mushrooms and truffles from Alsace in the heart of the most beautiful village in France
Every last weekend of October since 2006, Eguisheim — voted Most Beautiful Village in France in 2013 — celebrates the fascinating world of mushrooms. Organized by the Association of Economic Partners of Eguisheim with the Mycological Society of Haut-Rhin and the Association Truffes d'Alsace, this free festival brings together enthusiasts, gourmets, and families around an exhibition of 200 species, the Official Alsatian Truffle Market, mushroom-hunting outings in the forest, and entertainment in the picturesque village alleys.
Nestled at the foot of the vineyards on the Alsace Wine Route, Eguisheim is an architectural gem with its colorful half-timbered houses, concentric alleys, and the Counts' Castle. Voted Most Beautiful Village in France in 2013 on the France 2 show, this postcard-perfect village hosts the Mushroom Festival every last weekend of October, an event that transforms its medieval streets into a vast space for discovery and tasting dedicated to the mysterious and fascinating world of mushrooms.
Created in 2006 on the initiative of La Boutique du Champignon d'Eguisheim, this festival has become in less than twenty years one of the major gastronomic and scientific events of the Alsatian autumn. Organized by the Association des Partenaires Économiques d'Eguisheim, it brings together an exceptional network of partners: the Société Mycologique du Haut-Rhin, the Association Truffes d'Alsace, the Association des Trufficulteurs du Grand Est, and the village's restaurateurs and winegrowers.
The scientific heart of the festival is a mycological exhibition held in the winegrower Jean-Luc Freudenreich's cellar, at 32 Grand Rue. Members of the Société Mycologique du Haut-Rhin present 100 to 200 species of mushrooms freshly harvested from Alsatian forests, identified and labeled daily. Mycologists are available to answer all visitor questions, from novices to seasoned enthusiasts.
For several years, the Mushroom Festival has hosted the Official Alsatian Truffle Market, organized under the auspices of the Association Truffes d'Alsace and the Trufficulteurs du Grand Est. On the Place du Château, Alsatian truffle growers offer their certified truffles for sale, with public quality checks. Thematic conferences "Truffles on the Plate" are held at 11 am in the Freudenreich cellar, and a prize draw allows lucky winners to take home fresh truffles.
Guided mushroom-hunting outings in the forest are among the most popular activities. Led by mycologists from the Société du Haut-Rhin, they depart from the Town Hall parking lot on Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 am and 2:30 pm, with a limit of 20 participants per group (advance registration required at the tourist office). A local produce market brings together local producers and artisans in the village's three squares, enlivened by street performances and music. Partner restaurants offer special mushroom-themed menus paired with wines from the Eguisheim vineyard.
True to its spirit of openness, the Eguisheim Mushroom Festival is completely free. Access to exhibitions, conferences, markets, and all entertainment is free. Only the mushroom-hunting outings in the forest require free advance registration. A meeting place for sharing and exchange for all mushroom lovers — mycologists, mushroom enthusiasts, and mushroom eaters — this festival embodies Alsatian conviviality in an exceptional setting.
The 20th edition of the Eguisheim Mushroom Festival will take place on October 24 and 25, 2026. For this twentieth anniversary, the village celebrates Alsatian mushrooms and truffles with a mycological exhibition, the 9th Official Truffle Market, forest outings, a local produce market, and entertainment. Free entry.
