The Furia Sound Festival: fifteen years of rock and metal in Val-d'Oise
Founded in 1996, the Furia Sound Festival held a central place in the rock and metal music festival scene in Île-de-France for fifteen years. Based in Val-d'Oise, it successively occupied several sites in the department before settling permanently at the Cergy-Pontoise Leisure Center, then in Franconville for its last planned edition.
Over its nine documented editions, from 2001 to 2010, the festival hosted over 200 different artists, from national and international rock, metal, punk, hardcore, and electro scenes. Each edition brought together tens of thousands of spectators, making Furia Sound one of the unmissable summer festival events in Île-de-France.
The early years and itinerant venues
The first editions of the Furia Sound Festival were held in various locations in Val-d'Oise. In 2001, the festival set up its first tents at the Abbaye de Maubuisson in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, in a surprising medieval setting for an amplified music event. In 2003 and 2004, the festival moved to Taverny, on the Terrain Vert de Boissy.
The era of the Cergy-Pontoise Leisure Center (2005-2009)
From 2005 onwards, the festival found its most stable and ambitious configuration at the Cergy-Pontoise Leisure Center, a vast green and leisure space on the banks of the Oise. It was in this setting that Furia Sound reached its greatest dimensions, offering several outdoor stages, night concerts, and a very high-level rock-metal lineup. The 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 editions followed in June, with national and international headliners.
In 2010, a smaller edition was held in December, at the Salle Municipale de Pierrelaye.
The last cancelled edition (2011)
The 15th edition of the Furia Sound Festival was announced for June 11 and 12, 2011 in Franconville (95130), marking a return to a town in the agglomeration. But on June 7, 2011, just a few days before the opening, the organizers announced the cancellation of the festival for unspecified reasons, putting a definitive end to this fifteen-year festival adventure.
An important musical legacy
Although the Furia Sound Festival now belongs to the musical history of Val-d'Oise, its legacy remains vibrant in the memory of Parisian rock and metal fans. It helped introduce hundreds of artists, train generations of festival-goers, and demonstrate that the rock scene could flourish in open spaces in peri-urban areas. Several of the associations and structures that animated it continued cultural activities in Val-d'Oise after its disappearance.
