The wine festival at the foot of the fortified church of Hunawihr on the Alsace Wine Route
The Hunafascht gets its name from Saint Hune, the legendary patron saint of Hunawihr, wife of Lord Hunon who, according to tradition, lived in the 7th century. This wine festival takes place on the Place de la Hunamatt, at the foot of the fortified church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, a listed 14th-century historic monument surrounded by a fortified octagonal enclosure. The setting is simply exceptional: the illuminated church overlooks the village and the surrounding vineyards, creating a magical and unique atmosphere in Alsace.
The Hunafascht unfolds over two evenings, on the Friday and Saturday of the first weekend in August, from 6 PM to midnight. As soon as it opens, visitors are welcomed into a warm and festive atmosphere, lulled by the melodies of quality orchestras performing on the stage set up at the foot of the church. Traditional Alsatian music, popular hits, and folk dances set the rhythm for these summer evenings in a timeless setting.
The winemakers of Hunawihr offer their wines for tasting: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and the vintages from the prestigious Grand Cru Rosacker, a terroir renowned for its fine, mineral Rieslings. Volunteers from the festival committee prepare wood-fired tarte flambées, grilled sausages, and homemade desserts on site, creating an authentic village festival atmosphere where Alsatian generosity is paramount.
Hunawihr is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France and is one of the most photographed sites in Alsace. Nestled between Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr, this small wine village charms with its half-timbered houses, flowery alleys, and especially its famous fortified church perched on a hill amidst the vineyards. The 14th-century fortified enclosure, with its six semi-circular bastions, once served as a refuge for the villagers. The church has housed a simultaneum since 1687, accommodating both Catholic and Protestant worship.
Hunafascht is a free festival open to all, in the spirit of conviviality that characterizes Alsatian wine festivals. The intimate atmosphere of the Place de la Hunamatt, the illuminated church in the background, and the quality of the wines offered make this event a special moment, far from the hustle and bustle of large gatherings. It's the perfect opportunity to discover Hunawihr and its terroirs in a festive and authentic setting.
