Roots reggae and dub in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards in Saint-Bris-le-Vineux
At the Domaine de Douzein, in the wine village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux near Auxerre, the Jah Love Reggae Festival makes the Yonne vibrate to the rhythm of roots reggae, dub, and sound systems. Supported by the association Arts et maîtrise scénique, this open-air festival brings together Jamaican legends and new generation artists every summer in a fifteen-hectare park with a shaded campsite. An unmissable event for lovers of reggae vibes in Burgundy.
A few kilometers south of Auxerre, the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux is known throughout Burgundy for its ancient troglodyte cellars, its listed medieval architecture, and its exceptional vineyards—the only Burgundy terroir producing a Sauvignon Blanc with its own appellation. It is in this striking setting that the Jah Love Reggae Festival has established its home, at the Domaine de Douzein, a vast fifteen-hectare private park with century-old trees offering welcome shade in the summer heat.
Supported by the association Arts et maîtrise scénique (AMS89), the festival's mission is to promote reggae culture in the Yonne region. Where winemakers perpetuate age-old traditions, the organizers create a space of fraternity, peace, and positive vibes every summer, true to the Jamaican spirit of One Love. The contrast between the limestone slopes of the vineyards and the deep bass of the sound systems creates a unique, intimate, and warm atmosphere, far removed from large industrial festivals.
The artistic direction of the Jah Love Reggae Festival is distinguished by its commitment to the roots of reggae: roots reggae, dub, ska, rocksteady, and sound system culture form the foundation of each program. From the very first editions, the organizers have succeeded in convincing iconic figures of the international reggae scene to travel to Burgundy.
Among the artists associated with the festival's history are illustrious names: Eek-A-Mouse, a Jamaican singjay legend; Kiddus I, a pioneer of roots reggae whose voice transcends decades; Rod Taylor, a master of conscious roots; and Addis Pablo and Rockers International, direct heirs to the tradition of his father, Augustus Pablo. On the sound system front, collectives like Salomon Heritage, Drop It Sound, Daktary Sound, and High Sensorial Sound keep the site vibrating until dawn, perpetuating the Jamaican tradition of outdoor dancehall.
The new generation is also well represented: Hempress Sativa, queen of female roots reggae; Broussaï, a key figure in French reggae; Xana Romeo and Sun Sooley have brought their energy and modernity to the stage at Domaine de Douzein. This ability to blend legends with young artists gives Jah Love its intergenerational character and its unique dynamism.
The festival site is one of its major assets. The Domaine de Douzein, a private property on the outskirts of the village, unfolds its fifteen hectares of parkland amidst shaded meadows, tree-lined paths, and open spaces. The main stage is set in a green setting that enhances the magic of reggae nights, with the Burgundy stars as the only ceiling.
The campsite, fully shaded and free, welcomes festival-goers from all over France and beyond. This on-site accommodation fosters the community spirit so dear to reggae culture: exchanges, musical improvisations, and encounters form around the bivouacs, lasting long after the concerts end. The catering offered on-site highlights local products from the Auxerrois region, and it's not uncommon for neighboring winemakers from Saint-Bris to offer tastings of their Sauvignon wines just a stone's throw from the sound system's bass.
The association Arts et maîtrise scénique is not limited to organizing the festival. It works throughout the year to promote reggae culture and world music in the Yonne region through workshops, conferences, and artistic residencies. The Jah Love Reggae Festival is the showcase for this in-depth work, a way to highlight artists who are often little-known in the mainstream media.
The spirit of the festival is resolutely family-friendly and inclusive: children are welcome, ticket prices remain affordable, and activities around the stage (dance workshops, photographic exhibitions, association stands) allow everyone to immerse themselves in reggae culture beyond just the concerts. The Jah Love Reggae Festival is living proof that reggae, a music of peace and resistance, finds fertile ground even in the vineyards of Burgundy.
To complement the festival experience, the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux is well worth a visit. Its Saint-Prix-et-Saint-Cot church, a Gothic building from the 12th to 16th centuries classified as a historic monument, houses Europe's largest painted Tree of Jesse (8 meters high). The 17th-century Château Lambert and the medieval troglodyte cellars—among the most remarkable in Burgundy, some having belonged to the Knights Templar—complete a heritage of rare richness for a village of this size. About ten wine estates offer tastings in their cellars throughout the year.
