2026 Season — At the Pontigny Abbey Church
Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny return for their 2026 season, true to the tradition of excellence that has driven the association Les Amis de Pontigny since 1988. The musical season will begin, as every year, with the Pentecost concert on May 25, 2026, a highly anticipated event for regular music lovers in the region as well as for passing visitors.
Throughout the summer, the 12th-century Cistercian abbey church — the largest abbey of the Order of Cîteaux in the world — will once again open its doors to the classical and sacred music concerts that have made it a major hub of musical life in Burgundy for thirty-five years. Organ recitals on the restored historic instrument, vocal music concerts, chamber ensembles, and thematic programs typically make up a season of five to six events.
The complete program for the 2026 season will be announced on the abbey's official website. Reservations can be made by mail or email, accompanied by payment, at least ten days before each concert.

Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny: Sacred Music at the Heart of the Cistercian Abbey Church
In the village of Pontigny, between Auxerre and Chablis, stands one of Burgundy's architectural marvels: the Cistercian abbey church founded in 1114, the largest church of the Order of Cîteaux in the world, measuring 120 meters long and covering 4,000 m². This exceptional setting, bathed in golden light filtering through white stained-glass windows in accordance with the Cistercian ideal of sobriety and simplicity, has hosted Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny every year since 1988, a concert series organized by the association Les Amis de Pontigny.
Founded in 1985 to preserve, promote, and culturally animate this gem of Burgundian heritage, the association Les Amis de Pontigny has made music the living soul of the abbey. The natural acoustics of the abbey church, remarkable for its proportions and the quality of its white stone, magnificently enhances the human voice, the historic organ, and chamber ensembles with equal generosity. Over the decades, this unique venue has earned a reputation as a major center for singing in Burgundy, attracting internationally renowned musicians.
The Organ of Pontigny: An Instrument with a Thousand Stories
At the heart of the programming, the organ of the Pontigny abbey church holds a special place. This fascinating instrument has a history as rich as it is eventful: the current organ, built by Jean Richard in the late 18th century from an earlier instrument by master Chrétien Dognon, was severely damaged by the explosion of a munitions train at Pontigny station in 1943. Rebuilt between 1951 and 1960 by the Gutschenritter firm, it was classified as a historic monument in 1991 for its casing and in 2007 for its instrumental parts, before undergoing restoration to return it to its original state. The Pontigny organ is today one of the most remarkable historic instruments in the Yonne region, and each concert dedicated to it reveals a new facet of its incomparable voice in the Cistercian nave.
A Musical Season from May to September
Each year, Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny offers five to six concerts spread from May to September, building a demanding program ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary vocal music, including Renaissance polyphony, instrumental baroque, and the great masterpieces of the classical and romantic repertoire. Composers such as Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Schubert, Haydn, Couperin, Rameau, and Buxtehude find in the Cistercian nave a setting worthy of their genius.
Among the recurring highlights of the programming:
- The Pentecost Concert — an annual highlight for over thirty years, this grand opening concert of the musical summer brings together choirs, soloists, and ensembles in a renewed program. In 2023, it was dedicated to Schubert; in 2026, it is scheduled for May 25th.
- July and August Organ Concerts — solos and recitals with the greatest French organists, including Jean-Pierre Lecaudey, Martin Gester, and other leading performers, in programs dedicated to the masters of French and European baroque music.
- Summer Vocal Concerts — viola da gamba ensembles, choirs, a cappella concerts, and thematic programs exploring rare repertoires, such as Musiques pour les Filles du Roi (voices, viols, and positive organ) or Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ.
Régis Pasquier and International Radiance
The violinist Régis Pasquier, an emblematic figure of French and international classical music, played a decisive role in the artistic development of Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny, helping to attract world-renowned musicians to the abbey. His attachment to this place and to the association Les Amis de Pontigny symbolizes the festival's mission: to combine the highest artistic standards with cultural transmission accessible to all, in a setting of striking heritage beauty.
A Festival at the Heart of the Cistercian Heritage of the Yonne
The second daughter of the mother abbey of Cîteaux, founded in 1114 by Hugues de Mâcon with twelve monks from Cîteaux and the support of Thibaut de Champagne, the abbey of Pontigny is one of the few Cistercian abbeys to have preserved its abbey church intact. Unlike most of the order's buildings, which disappeared during wars or the Revolution, the Pontigny abbey church still stands today with its ribbed vaults, white stained-glass windows, and Romanesque bays, a striking demonstration of Cistercian architecture at its perfection. Three Archbishops of Canterbury found refuge there in the Middle Ages — including Saint Thomas Becket from 1164 to 1166 — giving the place a spiritual dimension that transcends national borders.
Les Heures Musicales de Pontigny are fully in line with this vocation of openness and rayonnement of the abbey, bringing its millennial beauty to meet the music that is contemporary to it or that extends its tradition of prayer and contemplation. Concerts are held with simple ticketing: €18 full price, €15 for association members, and free for children and students. This accessibility reflects the spirit of the association, deeply committed to sharing this heritage treasure with as many people as possible.
