Classical music festival in the Notre-Dame church of Villeneuve-l'Archevêque
Every summer since 2012, Les Harmonies Estivales has made the Gothic stone of the Notre-Dame church of Villeneuve-l'Archevêque resonate. Three evenings of intimate classical music, bringing together two to three excellent musicians around a theme renewed each year, under the artistic direction of violinist Isabelle Durin.
Nestled in the Vanne valley, halfway between Sens and Troyes, Villeneuve-l'Archevêque hosts one of the most endearing musical events in the Yonne region every August. For three evenings, Les Harmonies Estivales transforms the Notre-Dame church—a Gothic masterpiece classified as a Historic Monument since 1886—into a concert hall like no other. Its 13th-century vaults, stained-glass windows, and north portal with Champenois statues lend each concert an almost sacred dimension.
The festival was founded in 2012 on the initiative of Michel Rebequet, then mayor of Villeneuve-l'Archevêque, who wished to perpetuate the summer musical tradition of the commune. It followed a festival held since 2002 in the grounds of the Château de Pouilly-sur-Vanne, before the latter was sold. From the outset, the artistic direction was entrusted to Isabelle Durin, a trained violinist and member of the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France, whose attachment to this territory and borderless musical curiosity give the festival its unique character.
The hallmark of Les Harmonies Estivales lies in a deliberate choice: ensembles of two to three musicians, never more. 'I favor small ensembles to create a more intimate atmosphere, conducive to revealing emotions, allowing the listener to find their place in the dialogue that forms,' explains Isabelle Durin. In the hushed silence of the Notre-Dame church, every note carries, every exchange between musicians becomes visible and palpable.
This choice gives the festival rare flexibility in its programming. Each edition is built around a unifying theme, renewed from year to year, which guides the choice of works and the formation of trios or duos: Love in its multiple nuances, Russian music from Tchaikovsky to Rachmaninoff, the genius of Beethoven celebrated on the 250th anniversary of his birth, or French chamber music in its most beautiful pages.
Each year, Isabelle Durin strives to compose programs that blend established musicians with emerging talents. Among the artists who have participated in Les Harmonies Estivales are:
The village of Villeneuve-l'Archevêque is one of the medieval bastides founded in the 12th century by the Counts of Champagne before coming under the lordship of the Archbishops of Sens, from whom the commune derives its name. Its Notre-Dame church, remodeled in the 13th and 16th centuries, features a north portal of exceptional beauty: an angel with a Champenois-style smile, a Virgin of the Annunciation, a tympanum, and a frieze depicting the life of the Virgin. This incomparable heritage setting is the ideal showcase for a festival that celebrates beauty in all its forms.
Organized by the Syndicat d'Initiative de la Vallée de la Vanne, Les Harmonies Estivales has become over the years a pillar of cultural life in the Sénonais region. At the crossroads of the Yonne and Aube departments, between Sens, Troyes, and Auxerre, the festival welcomes a loyal audience from all over the region, as well as passing music lovers attracted by the event's growing reputation. Its modest size—three concerts over a weekend at the end of August—makes it an event of rare quality, far from the hustle and bustle of large gatherings, bringing audiences closer to the music and those who perform it.
After more than a decade of existence, Les Harmonies Estivales remains true to its primary mission: to bring great classical music to an exceptional rural setting, at affordable prices, so that everyone can experience the unique intimacy of a concert in the heart of a Burgundian heritage monument.
The 14th edition of Les Harmonies Estivales will take place around the weekend of August 20-22, 2026, in the Notre-Dame church of Villeneuve-l'Archevêque. Three evenings of intimate classical music under the artistic direction of Isabelle Durin, within the Gothic historic monument of the Sénonais.
Les Harmonies Estivales returns for its 14th edition, around the weekend of August 20-22, 2026, in the Notre-Dame church of Villeneuve-l'Archevêque. Artistic director Isabelle Durin is preparing a new edition faithful to the festival's intimate philosophy: small chamber ensembles—two to three musicians—for a direct musical communion between performers and audience, within the exceptional setting of this Gothic masterpiece classified as a Historic Monument.
As every year, the program will be built around a unifying musical theme, to be announced in spring 2026. The programming draws from the great repertoires of European chamber music—classical, romantic, baroque, or contemporary—with a preference for works that allow for emotion and dialogue between musicians.
Tickets will be available from the Syndicat d'Initiative de la Vallée de la Vanne (SIVV) and on-site ticketing before each concert. To be informed of the program and guest artists as soon as they are announced, you can contact Isabelle Durin directly or the Villeneuve-l'Archevêque town hall via the official commune website.
