Autour de l'Orgue Renaissance: the festival of a musical treasure from the Yonne

Nestled in the Saint-Pierre collegiate church of Saint-Julien-du-Sault (89330), the 1568 Renaissance organ is one of the four oldest organs preserved in France. It is around this heritage gem that the association Autour de l'Orgue Renaissance was built, which organizes a series of concerts each year highlighting this exceptional instrument and the repertoire of early music.

A unique instrument of its kind

The organ of the Saint-Pierre collegiate church of Saint-Julien-du-Sault is an irreplaceable testament to French Renaissance organ building. Built in 1568, it has survived the centuries, retaining a significant part of its case and original mechanism. Classified as a historic monument, it offers a sound palette characteristic of the Renaissance period, with its fluty stops and unique harmonic colors, very different from the baroque or romantic organs that succeeded it.

The instrument has been carefully maintained by the association and local authorities, who ensure its conservation and enhancement. It is today one of the rare opportunities to hear music played on an organ of this period in authentic conditions.

The Saint-Pierre collegiate church of Saint-Julien-du-Sault is itself a monument of great beauty. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, it is a fine example of Champenois Gothic architecture, with its remarkable stained glass windows and harmonious proportions. The natural acoustics of the nave provide an ideal setting for early music concerts, allowing the organ's sounds to unfold in all their richness.
