Discovery of the historical and cultural heritage of Oloron-Sainte-Marie
The Journées du Patrimoine d'Oloron-Sainte-Marie are part of the European Heritage Days, a national event organized every third weekend of September. Led by the City of Oloron-Sainte-Marie, a city of art and history, these days offer a rich program of guided tours, exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and sensory experiences through the city's exceptional heritage — the Sainte-Marie cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sainte-Croix church, the Maison du Patrimoine, the medieval quarter, and the banks of the gaves. All activities are free.
Every third weekend of September, Oloron-Sainte-Marie opens wide the doors to its heritage for the European Heritage Days. A city of art and history nestled at the confluence of the Aspe and Ossau rivers, Oloron-Sainte-Marie boasts an exceptionally rich architectural, religious, and cultural heritage, which these days allow you to discover or rediscover.
The jewel of Oloron's heritage is the Sainte-Marie Cathedral, whose 12th-century Romanesque portal is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. The Heritage Days offer an opportunity for in-depth guided tours of this major monument, including the discovery of the historic organ, the cathedral's treasury, and the sacred relics known as "François Ier".
The program for the Journées du Patrimoine d'Oloron offers thematic guided tours: a route along the paths of Santiago de Compostela, a discovery of the Sainte-Croix medieval quarter, an exploration of the Maison du Patrimoine (52 rue Dalmais), and architectural walks along the rivers. Children's workshops, heritage escape games, and family tours make these days accessible to all audiences.
Beyond traditional tours, the Journées du Patrimoine d'Oloron innovates with artistic and sensory experiences. During the 2025 edition, a "banquet of scents" offered a unique olfactory experience on the cathedral's forecourt, inviting visitors to "taste the world through smell," with refined dishes and wines served in the form of fragrances. Concerts, readings, and screenings complete this original program.
The City of Oloron-Sainte-Marie works throughout the year to valorize its heritage through the Maison du Patrimoine, summer guided tours, and historical publications. The Journées du Patrimoine are the highlight of this heritage policy, bringing together residents and visitors to share the discovery of a common legacy.
All activities offered during the Journées du Patrimoine d'Oloron are free, in the spirit of the European Heritage Days. Only certain ancillary sports activities (such as rafting) are offered at a preferential rate. Registration for guided tours may be necessary due to limited spaces.
The Journées du Patrimoine d'Oloron will be held on September 19 and 20, 2026, with a program of guided tours, workshops, exhibitions, and free activities in the city's heritage sites.
The European Heritage Days in Oloron-Sainte-Marie will return on September 19 and 20, 2026. The program will be announced in the fall of 2026 on the City of Oloron-Sainte-Marie website.
