The winter gathering for contemporary music in Mayenne
Les Foins d'Hiver is the winter edition of the Au Foin de la Rue association, based in Saint-Denis-de-Gastines in Mayenne. Created in 2003, this biennial festival alternates between the town of Mayenne and the community of communes of Ernée, offering free and paid concerts, live performances, and activities for all audiences. Mixing eclectic contemporary music, cultural actions in schools, and conviviality, Les Foins d'Hiver brings together nearly 2,500 people at each edition, an unmissable event in northern Mayenne to chase away the winter blues.
Since 2003, the association Au Foin de la Rue, known for its eponymous summer festival in Saint-Denis-de-Gastines, has been organizing a winter event called Les Foins d'Hiver. The goal is simple: to extend the festive and supportive spirit of summer into the heart of winter, in the north of Mayenne. This biennial festival alternates between the territories of Mayenne Communauté and the community of communes of Ernée, thus invigorating the cultural life of the entire northern Mayenne region.
Les Foins d'Hiver traditionally unfolds in three main parts. The first part, the barathon, is a tour of free concerts in the bars and restaurants of the host town: afternoon aperitif concerts, followed by evening concerts in several establishments simultaneously, creating an atmosphere of musical wandering through the streets. The second part is a Peace & Lobe educational concert, offered free of charge to schoolchildren and the general public to raise awareness about the risks of hearing damage from amplified music. Finally, the main evening brings the audience together in a multipurpose hall for one or more paid concerts featuring national and international contemporary music artists.
True to the DNA of Au Foin de la Rue, Les Foins d'Hiver features a deliberately eclectic program: rock, reggae, electro, hip-hop, world music, punk, folk, and Latin music are featured from one edition to the next. Artists such as Hilight Tribe, Biga Ranx, Zoufris Maracas, Zenzile, and Broussai have marked previous editions. The festival also highlights emerging bands and local artists, in a spirit of discovery and sharing.
The association Au Foin de la Rue, created in 2000, carries a cultural vision rooted in rurality and the social and solidarity economy. It acquired a former agricultural garage transformed into La Station, a third place dedicated to the social and solidarity economy and culture. Les Foins d'Hiver is part of this dynamic: organizers encourage eco-responsible practices (reusable cups, soft mobility) and mobilize a large network of volunteers. Each edition is conceived as a moment of social connection and diversity of audiences, combining concerts, family activities, and cultural mediation actions with schools and partner organizations in the region.
Les Foins d'Hiver takes place in the town of Mayenne or in the community of communes of Ernée, alternating according to the editions. The barathon concerts are spread across several bars and restaurants in the town center (V&B, crêperie Saint-Martin, restaurant Le Basilic, brasserie Le Hercé, La Renaissance, L'Agitato, among others). The main concert takes place in the multipurpose hall of the host town.
By car: Mayenne is accessible via the RN 162 (Laval-Fougères axis) and the D31 from Ernée. Free parking near the multipurpose hall and in the adjacent streets of the town center.
By train: Mayenne SNCF station (TER Laval-Mayenne line), then about a 10-minute walk to the town center and the barathon venues.
By bus: Aléop transport network, regional lines to Mayenne from Laval, Ernée, and surrounding towns.
The barathon (concert tour in bars) and the Peace & Lobe educational concert are offered free of charge to the public. The concert in the multipurpose hall is paid, with an advance ticket price of approximately €15 and a on-site price of approximately €18. Advance tickets available online on the festival website and at partner points of sale.
A refreshment stand is available at the main concert venue. Participating bars and restaurants in the barathon offer their own menus. Organizers encourage the public to bring their reusable cup to limit the use of disposable cups.
The Au Foin de la Rue association is committed to an eco-responsible approach: reusable cups, selective sorting, encouragement of soft mobility and carpooling. The festival favors short supply chains and partnerships with local players in the social and solidarity economy.
