Organ concert season at the Cathédrale Saint-Maclou de Pontoise
Founded in 1998, Les Heures Musicales de Pontoise is an association dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of the organs of Pontoise and its region. Every Sunday from September to July, at 5 p.m., the Cathédrale Saint-Maclou hosts an organ recital or a sacred music concert, bringing together major figures of contemporary organ music and promising young talents in one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in the Val-d'Oise.
Founded in 1998, Les Heures Musicales de Pontoise is an association whose mission is to promote and enhance the organs of Pontoise and its region to the widest possible audience. For over twenty-five years, they have organized a monthly concert season that makes the Cathédrale Saint-Maclou one of the key venues for organ music in the Île-de-France region.
The association has spanned decades while maintaining constant artistic standards, inviting both renowned international organ figures and talented young musicians at the beginning of their careers. It also works to maintain and enhance the instruments, thus contributing to the preservation of Pontoise's organ heritage.
The Cathédrale Saint-Maclou de Pontoise, a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic architecture whose construction spans the 15th to 17th centuries, houses a high-quality grand organ, whose sounds unfold magnificently under the vaults of the nave. The association manages and promotes this remarkable instrument, a true treasure of the musical heritage of the Val-d'Oise.
The cathedral setting, its natural acoustics, and the beauty of its Gothic architecture create a unique atmosphere for each concert, transforming every recital into an extraordinary artistic and spiritual experience.
The concerts of Les Heures Musicales de Pontoise take place every month, on Sundays at 5 p.m., from September to July. This monthly regularity creates a stable appointment for enthusiasts, who can plan their musical season with the association's concerts. Each season edition is numbered — the 28th season is underway in 2025-2026.
While the organ is at the heart of the programming, Les Heures Musicales de Pontoise does not hesitate to offer concerts that combine the instrument with other vocal or instrumental ensembles. Concerts for organ and choir, for organ and chamber orchestra, or four-hand organ recitals allow for the exploration of all facets of this majestic instrument.
The repertoire covers the entire history of the organ, from Bach's toccatas and fugues to contemporary works, including the French Romantic and post-Romantic repertoire — Franck, Vierne, Widor, Dupré, Langlais, Duruflé — which is particularly well-suited to large French cathedrals.
Beyond the concerts, the association offers conferences-demonstrations and guided tours allowing the public and schoolchildren to discover the secrets of the "organ machine": its mechanisms, its acoustics, its history. These educational activities contribute to raising awareness among a new audience, particularly young people, about the richness of organ heritage.
The 28th organ season of Les Heures Musicales de Pontoise continues until July 2026, with monthly concerts at the Cathédrale Saint-Maclou. The program includes an organ and choir concert on April 12, 2026, with Jean Langlais' Messe solennelle, and a recital by Philippe Bardon (Bach: from Leipzig to Venice) on February 15, 2026.
