Medieval and Fantastic: When Haut-Koenigsbourg Reveals Its Secrets
Dominating the Alsace plain from its 757 meters altitude, the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle is one of the most visited fortresses in France. Its ancient stones hold an unsuspected universe, populated by fantastic creatures sculpted in stone, mysterious architectural details, and secret corners that the thematic tour "Medieval and Fantastic" aims to unveil.
An Immersive Two-Hour Guided Tour
Accompanied by a passionate guide, visitors explore the fortress through a route of 300 steps leading from the cellars to the highest towers of the castle. The tour highlights the medieval sculptures, gargoyles, bas-reliefs, and architectural ornaments that adorn the fortress walls, evoking a fantastic bestiary worthy of the greatest fantasy works.
A Universe Between History and Imagination
The tour plays on the boundary between historical reality and medieval imagination. The turrets, the keep, the loopholes, and the ramparts take on a new dimension when viewed through the prism of the fantastic. The sculptures of real and mythical animals, alchemical symbols, and decorative details testify to the richness of medieval imagination and the builders' fascination with the marvelous.
A Castle Steeped in History
Built in the 12th century, Haut-Koenigsbourg has had a turbulent history, passing through the hands of several noble families before being destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Restored between 1901 and 1908 by architect Bodo Ebhardt on the orders of Emperor William II, the castle today offers an exceptional testimony to medieval fortified architecture, enriched by the romantic interpretations of the imperial restoration.
Complementary Events Throughout the Year
Beyond the "Medieval and Fantastic" tour, the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle offers a rich program of events: the "Châteaux et Légendes" festival, falconry shows, medieval writing workshops, children's activities, and temporary exhibitions. The castle is also the setting for Artefact Magique, a comic and illustration festival dedicated to the fantastic universe.
