Christmas at Wasselonne Castle: A Journey Through Time
Wasselonne, the gateway to the Mossig Valley and the vineyards of the Couronne d'Or, houses the remains of a medieval castle whose inner courtyard is transformed each year into an enchanting Christmas village. Christmas at the Castle is more than just a market: it's a true immersion into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, where Alsatian traditions and medieval entertainment combine to create a unique event in the region.
Over a Hundred Exhibitors in a Historic Setting
The Cour du Château hosts over a hundred exhibitors who present their creations in a remarkable heritage setting. Visitors stroll among the stalls offering original gift ideas, handmade Christmas decorations, bredele (traditional small Alsatian cakes), gingerbread, mulled wine with spices, and other local gourmet specialties. Local Wasselonne associations provide catering, offering hot dishes and sweets in a friendly atmosphere.
Medieval Entertainment and Live Shows
The originality of Christmas at the Castle lies in its medieval theme, which pays homage to the town's past. Throughout the weekend, the castle courtyard buzzes with entertainment evoking the Middle Ages:
- Medieval Music: Troubadours and musicians in period costumes perform ancient melodies.
- Medieval Dances: Costumed troupes perform period choreography.
- Living Nativity Scene: A Nativity play performed by volunteers within the castle walls.
- Falconry Demonstrations: Birds of prey in flight over the courtyard.
- Historical Scenes: Animated reenactments evoking medieval life.
The Mossig Valley Celebrates
Christmas at the Castle is part of a broader program of Christmas in Mossig and Vineyard, which sees several towns in the community of communes celebrate Christmas in their own way. Wasselonne, with its castle and medieval atmosphere, is the highlight. The visit is an opportunity to discover this charming town and its half-timbered houses, the castle tower, and the surrounding vineyards.
